My MMA Rankings
Top Welterweight MMA Fighters
-
1
- Georges St-Pierre
- "Rush"
- 26-2-0
-
Not too much to say, one of the most well rounded fighters in all of MMA. I don't see him losing at Welterweight for a long time..
-
2
- Jon Fitch
- 32-8-2, 1 NC
-
Hopefully he recovers from his injuries soon, and comes back and gets some wins and (more importantly) some finishes.
-
3
- Josh Koscheck
- "Kos"
- 17-11-0
-
Koscheck is an excellent wrestler, but GSP showed a gaping hole in Koscheck's game, and that is his striking. His only weapon on the feet is his overhand right, and if he doesn't catch his opponent with that, he has nothing standing up.
-
4
- Carlos Condit
- "The Natural Born Killer"
- 32-14-0
-
Condit has more heart than anyone else in the division. He's coming off a great win over Dong Hyun Kim.
-
5
- BJ Penn
- "The Prodigy"
- 16-14-2
-
BJ looked good against Fitch, a win over Condit will probably get him a title shot.
-
6
- Thiago Alves
- "Pitbull"
- 23-15-0
-
Got out stalled by the bedtime Story, but he'll be back. He's to skilled to stay outside of the top 5 for long.
-
7
- Jake Shields
- 33-11-1, 1 NC
-
I'm glad the Shields experiment is over. Somehow Zuffa fooled everyone into believing he had some sort of chance against GSP. He didn't. Now he's fighting Ellenberger. This will be a beatdown. (Shields will be on the receiving end)
-
8
- Martin Kampmann
- "Hitman"
- 21-7-0
-
He beat Sanchez.
-
9
- Nick Diaz
- 26-10-0, 2 NC
-
Good cardio and a good chin will do enough to help him beat up the second rate welterweights in Strikeforce, but he will lose to any solid wrestler, or good striker with a gas tank.
-
10
- Charlie Brenneman
- "The Spaniard"
- 19-8-0
-
Big props to Brenneman for beating Story on a day's notice.
-
11
- Rick Story
- "The Horror" | 21-10-0
-
After his "win" over Alves, Story got outwrestled by Brenneman. I have him ranked below Alves because although the judges said he won the fight, he took a beating and didn't deserve it. He has also accomplished much less than Alves in his career.
-
12
- Dong Hyun Kim
- "Stun Gun" | 22-4-1, 1 NC
-
Kim is one of the best grapplers in the WW division. His striking is lacking, but he makes up for it with great judo and wrestling.
-
13
- Rory MacDonald
- "Red King" | 23-10-1
-
Absolutely great performance against Diaz.
-
14
- Diego Sanchez
- "Nightmare" | 30-14-0
-
Won a gift decision over Kampmann, but he will probably get a step up in competition. I don't see him beating anyone in the top 10.
-
15
- Paulo Thiago
- "Caveira" | 19-11-0
-
Thiago is a very skilled fighter, but he got edged out by Sanchez and he got beat pretty handily by Kampmann. He needs to improve, and he has the potential to do so, if he wants to get back into the top 10. I expect/hope he will look spectacular in his next fight.
-
16
- Tyron Woodley
- "The Chosen One" | 19-7-1
-
Next SF WW champion.
-
17
- Jake Ellenberger
- "The Juggernaut" | 31-15-0
-
Crazy KO over Pierson... damn. A win over Shields puts him in the top 10.
-
18
- Ben Askren
- "Funky" | 19-2-0, 1 NC
-
Askren is one of the best wrestlers in MMA. He lacks a good striking game, but he mixes his BJJ and wrestling very fluently, and it works well. Bellator has a stacked Welterweight tournament coming up, and the winner of it can certainly present challenges for Askren.
-
19
- Brian Ebersole
- "Bad Boy" | 50-18-1, 1 NC
-
Burst onto the scene with his highly entertaining win over Lytle, then he had a great win over Hallman.
-
20
- Anthony Johnson
- "Rumble" | 23-6-0
-
Rumble dominated Hardy.
-
21
- Johny Hendricks
- "Big Rig" | 18-8-0
-
Great win over Pierce.
-
22
- John Hathaway
- "The Hitman" | 18-3-0
-
Hathaway's hype bubble is popped, as he just won a split decision over Kris McCray, who he should have destroyed.
-
23
- Mike Pyle
- "Quicksand" | 27-13-1
-
Pyle's miracle comeback trail came to a halting stop against Rory Macdonald.
-
24
- Matt Hughes
- 45-9-0
-
Hughes was on a great win streak until he met BJ Penn. He has the skills to stay a somewhat relevant gatekeeper, but Hughes probably won't want that, and should retire after a fight or two.
-
25
- Nate Diaz
- 21-13-0
-
Diaz likes to taunt, even when he's losing handily. It was refreshing to see Macdonald toss him around.
-
26
- Amir Sadollah
- 6-5-0
-
Great performance against Johnson, changed the minds of a lot of doubters.
-
27
- Matt Serra
- "The Terror" | 11-7-0
-
Serra didn't look great against Lytle. He has good Jiu-jitsu and solid striking, but he may be getting old. He did, however, knock Frank Trigg out in the first round.
-
28
- Jay Hieron
- "The Thoroughbred" | 23-7-0
-
Great opening fight in Bellator.
-
29
- Mike Pierce
- 17-7-0
-
Pierce has great wrestling, and could be a real threat in the UFC in the future.
-
30
- Evangelista Santos
- "Cyborg" | 21-18-0
-
Cyborg has put together a solid set of wins since refining his style, including a ko win over Marius Zaromskis. He could be a real threat at welterweight in strikeforce.
-
31
- Claude Patrick
- "The Prince" | 14-2-0
-
Patrick is a good wrestler, he has a big fight coming up with Daniel Roberts, should be a great fight.
-
32
- Chris Lytle
- "Lights Out" | 31-18-5
-
Bummer loss against Ebersole. Apparently he had some sort of injury, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if it was that or his age that made him look less than stellar.
-
33
- Dan Hardy
- "The Outlaw" | 25-10-0, 1 NC
-
His career is on a downslide, and he could get cut from the UFC with just one more loss.
-
34
- Sean Pierson
- "Punisher" | 14-6-0
-
Coming off a nasty ko loss to Jake Ellenberger.
-
35
- Dan Hornbuckle
- "The Handler" | 26-9-0
-
I thought he deserved the decision against Weedman, so I won't move him down too much, but it's clear his wrestling needs work.
-
36
- Matt Riddle
- "Deep Waters" | 8-3-0, 2 NC
-
Riddle showed huge holes in his game against Sean Pierson, and needs to improve if he doesn't want to lose his spot in the UFC.
-
37
- DaMarques Johnson
- "Darkness" | 16-15-0
-
38
- Lyman Good
- "Cyborg" | 21-6-0, 1 NC
-
Good can win the upcoming Bellator Welterweight tournament, and get another shot at champ Ben Askren.
-
39
- Brian Foster
- 30-12-0
-
Foster did well against Matt Brown, surprisingly submitting him with a guillotine.
-
40
- Matt Brown
- "The Immortal" | 24-19-0
-
41
- Dennis Hallman
- "Superman" | 52-20-2, 1 NC
-
Hopefully he doesn't get cut after the loss to Ebersole.
-
42
- Ben Saunders
- "Killa B" | 23-13-2
-
Great striking, especially good knees. He recently got cut from the UFC, but he should use this time to improve and should be back.
-
43
- John Howard
- "Doomsday" | 29-19-1
-
He just looked bad against Brown.
-
44
- Andre Galvao
- 5-2-0
-
Great Jiu-jitsu, but little to no striking, he needs to improve this. He tried out for tuf 13, but didn't make it, which is a bummer.
-
45
- Greg Soto
- 9-4-0
-
Solid fighter, but coming off a loss to Ninja Roberts.
-
46
- Jason High
- "The Kansas City Bandit" | 23-8-0
-
High is a very good wrestler, and he is coming off one of his biggest wins to date over Hayato Sakurai.
-
47
- Karo Parisyan
- "The Heat" | 24-12-0, 1 NC
-
He got cut from the UFC again following his loss to Hallman. He could do pretty well in strikeforce or bellator.
