Easy. Tarec's win over Nate was much more impressive than Shield's over Woodley and much more unanimously agreed with and Nate was coming off the KO of Woodley.

@Mule  How did you come up with a #5 ranking for Erick Silva?  Just curious.  It appears you're applying potential in place of actuality.  Looks premature.  With all due respect.  I think you're jumping the gun by 1.5 years.

Is it possible that Tarec's win over Nate was due more to Nate's inferior performance than to Tarec's overwhelming awesomeness?

It looks to me as if Nate is on a downward slide, until he checks his backsliding.

But I freely admit I'm deliberately slow to raise or lower people's rankings.  I like to make sure.  I like to go by last 3 fights instead of last one.

The list of wins Jake Shields has had in his career is so much more impressive than Tarec's. Granted, most of those high profile wins came while fighting at middleweight but most of the guys he was fighting at middleweight have dropped to WW too. Here are his notable wins: Carlos Condit, Yushin Okami, Mach Sakurai, Toby Imada, Mike Pyle, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Dan Henderson, Martin Kampmann (He was gifted this fight), Tyron Woodley,

Yep you're right. I've started basing my rankings on who I think would beat who, especially when there's a lack of evidence and since MMA itself is always progressing and younger fighters are generally improving, I look at Erick's loss to Fitch in the same light as Hughes/GSP I.

But you do realize it's possible to state your opinion without stating or insinuating that the other person's opinion is wrong.

That would defeat the purpose of trying to prove you're right, and the other person is wrong by only discussing facts without disputing each others merits.

Giving your opinion that contradicts the opinion of another is easy.  That allows everyone to choose which opinion makes the most sense, is more deep-seated, or has a less forced, natural flow of logic.

There is no particular value in criticizing a member.  Undermine the opinion, not the member.  Leave the member untouched.  It would make discussion much more enjoyable and satisfying.

Going after a member takes the focus off MMA and leads to bickering, rancor, malice and hi-jacks.

These things are basic to formal debate and its protocols.  The crap that goes on here would never be tolerated in a formally-conducted debate, and lead to the defeat of whoever tried it.

Undermining members admits you lost the discussion.

It's not undermining. Undermining would be if I began insulting you...*cough cough*.

I just disputed your logic, merits, and tried to show how mine are better. That's not undermining. That's me thinking I'm right. Don't over think it, Bill.

You rarely downthumb?  I guess I'm the lucky exception.  You break your rules in my case.

Or someone with the capabilities of doing so.

But I don't care whether you think I did or not. You just sound paranoid and victimized.

Ha ha ha.  You already said what you thought of this thread.  Remember?  It was quite graphic.  That lowered the thread.

This is a serious thread.  If you can behave yourself from here on in, you're welcome to discuss and debate, but if you backslide into your old habits, I will have to discipline you again and take you to the woodshed.

Well, what have we been doing the last few pages? Seems like civil discourse to me.

Let's see how long your new-found, born-again, civil discourse lasts.  And for the record, your allegation that you don't down-arrow me?  A little white fib.  A canard.  A lie.  You enjoy poking me in the eye too much.  Kicking me in the nuts is a hobby of yours.

Kalibo, my great friend and protector.  Got a huge favor to ask you.

I really want to keep this thread unsullied by nonsense, controversy.  Could you please go back the last 5 pages and purge this thread of all that unnecessary fighting and crap?

It pains me to see the thread so long and know its marred with BS.

This is a serious thread and I want it to remain so.  Above the fray.  All the **** where I call other trolls and their retorts are worthless to serious discussion.

Would massively appreciate the needed assist, Kalibo!!  Very necessary.
