@skelli dude pump the brakes a bit on Pettis. Yes when healthy he's one of the top p4p guys no question. But he has 1 title defense. 1. He's not in the debate for greatest of anything yet. Let's not forgot too Gil was winning that fight up until Pettis choked him out.

If you have Pettis as the GOAT LW you are a prisoner of the moment.

Remember this guy? I know it's been a while but he was kinda good at LW!

People were talking about benson being goat, then pettis went out there and dominated him for the 2nd time. And while I've always thought Melendez was GROSSLY overrated, other people value him highly and had the audacity to say he'd be the goat had he won, and pettis finished him easily.

And people in the MMA community put waaaaaaay too much stock into a career resume, the greatest of all time means the best to ever do it, and pettis is obviously far and away more talented and skilled than any other LW to step foot in the octagon.

26-1 sig. strikes landed on the ground for Lawler. HUGE stat. No passes. No sub attempts. And the guy who spend most of the time on the ground in top position landed 1 strike.

A bit off topic, But I think last night during the commercials they spoiled the TUF finale of who is in the finals. I am not sure if anyone else saw that.

@Messiah So if it's based purely on the most talented, I'm assuming you believe Anthony Pettis would at least draw with Lyoto Machida, if not beat Machida?

Zarog you're talking about a fight that happened a decade ago. Lyoto was not the fighter he became. That has absolutely zero relevance at all.

If it isn't blatantly obvious to you that Anthony is infinitely more talented than BJ Penn, I mean, there's just nothing I can say to illuminate it for you. But it's painfully obvious.

Being a prisoner of nostalgia is way more prevalent than being a prisoner of the moment.

Cain and JDS would obliterate a prime Fedor, it wouldn't even be close, probably doesn't last a minute. Doesn't mean Fedor wasn't great for his time, but it's a different sport with a different level of athlete.

JDS couldn't even obliterate an old, punch drunk Cro Cop or a 40yearold Mark Hunt but he'd obliterate a Prime Fedor in just one minute?

an old, punch drunk Cro Cop

because he was exposed in the UFC? Fedor didn't finish him either.

a 40yearold Mark Hunt .... is a better fighter now than he was then and it's pretty obvious.

as far as how a JDS/Fedor fight would go, Junior would the athletic advantage but he's too predictable and not well-rouned enough in the practiced use of his skills so Fedor, with his fine tactical mind would stand a much better chance vs. him than Cain. Probably still loses but if he can survive being spiked on his head and almost being decapitated by Fujita, he could probably last awhile vs. Junior.

I think Cain would overwhelm him like he does everybody. Fedor would have the same puncher's chance that Junior has & as long as Cain didn't have an injured knee Fedor would look like he did after the Bigfoot fight or similar to how Junior looked in the last 2 Cain fights.

Granted, it's not fedors fault, he beat who was put in front of him. But he has not a single win over a really good let alone even great HW. Let me use another sport here to draw a comparison for a moment. Imagine the NBA is only 15 years old and you can't make great money doing it but every other avenue for great athletes still garner millions. The NBA would be terrible. Athletes are athletes and talent is talent, it transfers to all sports for the most part. That's why HW is still a horrible division compared to the other divisions. smaller athletes who aren't big enough for the NBA or the NFL have started to trickle in as the sport has exploded, but no matter how big it gets people who are talented athletes and gifted with the size of a HW, are always going to take that more profitable avenue. Give either of Bones' brothers a year of training and they'd lay waste to all HWs outside of maybe Velasquez. It's just a fact.

We weren't debating who was more athletically gifted. We were talking about the greatest LW of all time. I don't see how a guy who is constantly injured and has 1 title defense can be the greatest. What makes true greatness is not fancy kicks it's sustaining a longevity of excellence. BJ did that in the LW division and nobody could touch him. If Pettis keeps winning then there is no doubt he could become the best that division has ever seen. But if it makes you feel better then yes Pettis is a better athlete then Penn.

What @p4p said. Still I think it's funny that Messiah is just discounting a guy's ability that managed to have controversial decision losses against both Machida and GSP. But whatever, I'm sure Pettis would've knocked both of those guys out because athleticism.

And only 3 of those 10 losses came at LW. Couture and Penn both have more losses then they should because they fought at weight classes that were too big for them.

And as a side note that is a big reason why Randy was so special. 3 time UFC champ in a division he was far too small for.
