I don't want to hear **** about a black belt, jujitsu is not MMA, and one black belt means something completely different than another.

Finishing benson and Gilbert back to back is unquestionably better than anything BJ did in back to back fights.

BJ Penn is a world champion in BJJ. Yes he's better then Pettis on the ground. Come on man!!!

I'll say it again, speed and taking advantage of opportunities in a fight is not even close to the same thing as what happens in bjj tournaments. Also in his whole career Bj Penn never finished a single fight with anything other than an arm choke. Sounds actually pretty basic.

Messiah one thing you have misspoken about is who is naturally more talented. The knock against BJ has always been that he rides his talent and is not the hardest worker. To be a two division UFC champ on talent alone should tell you who is more talented.

Pettis works harder in gym to take his talent to a higher level. If Pettis wasnt a hard worker would he be where he is today?

Two pages ago you are talking **** about Gil being overrated in your opinion now want to leverage what he has done to further your argument. You have to pick. You can't discredit a guy then use him to support your argument, which actually lessens your argument because you previously discredited said fighter.

People were talking about Melendez being the goat, but he is  definitely better than most of BJs LW wins.

But you said is he overrated and now want to use his accomplishments to further your argument. So how overrated is he in your opinion if you are willing to use him as a point in your argument?

Records against top 25 all time lightweight fighters:

Shinya Aoki: 8-3 (1 NC)
Benson Henderson: 8-3
Gilbert Melendez: 7-3
Anthony Pettis: 4-1
Eddie Alvarez: 4-3
BJ Penn: 4-3-1 (you could add 1 loss for Edgar's win at 145, I did not)
Takanori Gomi: 4-5
Frankie Edgar: 3-3-1 (you could add 1 win for Edgar's win over Penn at 145, I did not)
Nate Diaz: 3-4
Donald Cerrone: 1-5

My problem with labeling Pettis as the greatest ever is that he hasn't fought the best names available on nearly as consistent of a basis as other guys.

I think the real problem with this discussion is we're talking about two different things. Messiah has defined "greatest" as being synonymous with "best." In that case, I agree that Pettis is already the top LW all time. I think the difference is that everyone else does not define greatest as best. I'll give an example, I think Floyd Mayweather is one of the most technically sound boxers in history. I in no way would put him in a top 10 greatest boxers list. It's about total career accomplishments, not just being the best. In a similar vein, Pettis doesn't have the accomplishments to match his skill...yet. He's young and has plenty of time to do that.

I say we table all this GOAT talk until Pettis is at or near the end of his career. That way we can actually see how he does in the long run, cuz that's what being GOAT is all about.

Pettis LW GOAT? Put down the crack pipe folks. All of you will be singing a different tune when Khabib suplexes him into dust.

This is what happens all the time. Do you define GOAT as the guy that at his peak would have beaten everyone else? Or do you define GOAT as the guy that ACTUALLY accomplished the most.

There is no case right now for Pettis having accomplished more than BJ. He just had his FIRST title defense ever. Give it time.

If you want to argue that the best Pettis would beat the best BJ Penn, then that is fine. IMO it is not a clear win for Pettis and so I can't give him that. He has not shown enough IMO to say he would definitely beat the best BJ Penn. This one is clearly more opinion based and so I really don't like getting into this.

This debate happens with Tyson all the time. In a fight the best Tyson beats just about any other boxer ever; but in judging accomplishments some people don't even have him as top ten HW boxers of all time. Lesnar is the opposite. He accomplished a ton in his very short career, but at his best doesn't really stack up well against other great HWs.

I agree with everything else you said, except about Tyson. Tyson would not beat just about everyone.  There are number of boxers who would beat him and he on bottom end of the top 10. Someone like Foreman would murder Tyson. Hell there many people that argue Tyson ducked old Foreman.

@CT
I agree, I think Khabib gets it done

GOAT Pettis gets a 6 month med suspension due to his hand. Seriously, the dude not being able to maintain health is going to hurt his legacy more than his fighting ability IMO.
