Muñoz vs. Simpson Wiki Update Wiki

The first bout to be televised on the Spike TV preliminary card for UFC 122 featured Mark Munoz taking on Aaron Simpson. Munoz entered the bout 3-2 in the UFC yet coming off of a loss, while Simpson was 3-1 in UFC competition and also coming off of a loss.

Simpson came out in the first round looking to press the action, throwing a powerful low kick and clinching up with Munoz against the cage. Munoz pushed Simpson off only to then press Simpson into the same position. A solid knee to the head in the clinch delivered by Simpson caused Munoz to back away. Simpson sprawled out of a takedown and momentarily took Munoz's back. A slam takedown from Simpson came a moment later yet Munoz quickly popped back up. Munoz delivered a good combination of punches that stunned Simpson, forcing him to clinch up. A few more standing exchanges marked the end of an exciting and competitive first round.

The fighters exchanged kicks to the midsection early in round two, with Simpson catching the leg and briefly bringing the action to the ground. Munoz kept moving forward and scored a double-leg takedown. Back to the feet and Simpson hit Munoz with a low blow that paused the fight. With a small stream of blood coming down Munoz's forehead the fight resumed. More grueling exchanged ensued with both fighters throwing hard. Munoz landed a high kick that slapped across Simpson's face but Simpson apparently unfazed scored a takedown up against the fence. Referee Mark Fennell gave Simpson only a few seconds to work before deciding to stand them back up in a questionable officiating decision. This time it was Simpson's turn to eat a knee to the groin but it only stopped the fight for a second. Simpson scored a takedown but the fast-paced fight saw an immediate scramble back to the feet. The round ended up against the fence.

The fighters briefly embraced to begin round three and then Simpson caught a kick to score a takedown. Munoz reversed position and landed a series of shots to Simpson's head. Simpson stood as Munoz kept throwing, though Simpson claimed to have been poked in the eye and earned a quick break. The next minute was spent in the clinch with Munoz delivering more offense. The high-pace continued with a takedown by Simpson, a scramble back to the feet, and a handful of big exchanges with both fighters going for broke as the close match ended.

All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Mark Munoz by unanimous decision. In the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Munoz commented, "I know Aaron doesn't back down, and I didn't back down for three rounds."
