Kelly vs. O'Brien Wiki Update Wiki

The second bout in UFC 123 had Paul Kelly (4-3 in UFC competition) take on promotional newcomer TJ O'Brien. O'Brien was a late replacement for Gabe Ruediger, who withdrew from his bout with Kelly due to a torn groin.

The taller O'Brien landed a solid low kick early, followed up by a head kick that was blocked by Kelly. Kelly dropped O'Brien with a glancing blow, but opted to allow the dangerous grappler O'Brien to stand back up. Referee Dan Miragliotta broke them up from a clinch against the fence and Kelly came back looking increasingly comfortable with his striking combinations. A flying knee from O'Brien missed but enabled him to pull guard, with Kelly standing back up and out moments later. The close round ended with Kelly likely having a slight edge.

Kelly missed with a spinning back kick to begin round two, answered with another O'Brien low kick. Kelly roared back with a punch that dropped O'Brien and dove in to try and ground and pound his way to victory. O'Brien was still sharp, however, and Kelly wisely stood out of the dangerous guard. A subsequent scramble saw O'Brien take Kelly's back in his most advantageous position of the night. Kelly found a way out and secured a top-side crucifix, throwing down elbows and punches to the exposed head of O'Brien. No escape could be found by O'Brien, and finally the referee had seen enough damage and called a stop to the fight, declaring Paul Kelly the winner via TKO.
