Barboza vs. Lullo Wiki Update Wiki
The third bout of UFC 123 had newcomers Mike Lullo and Edson Barboza face off. Barboza came in with a significant amount of hype and was initially slated to face off against Darren Elkins. Lullo stepped in on two weeks notice when Elkins suffered a knee injury in training.
Barboza came out and landed a handful of powerful low kicks. Lullo looked for a takedown but Barboza defended and them slammed Lullo to the mat and into side control. Barboza opted to stand back up and fire more low kicks. Another takedown from Barboza put him in Lullo's full guard, where Lullo immediately showed off a flexible guard and worked towards a rare gogoplata. With his left leg successfully underneath Barboza's chin, the threat was real as Barboza looked for a way out, finally popping out after a minute stuck in danger. Another powerful low kick from Barboza connected, and yet another, adding up on Lullo's exposed lead left leg. A leg kick dropped Lullo and then a spinning back kick missed, as Barboza's striking attack became more fluid and diverse.
Barboza came out throwing more kicks in round two. Lullo worked for a takedown that Barboza defended, and he continued with a variety of kicks. Barboza landed in Lullo's guard, who again began working his rubber guard and throwing short elbows to Barboza's forehead. Barboza slipped out and resumed his low kick attack. A pair of big uppercuts to Lullo's chin didn't seem to faze the tough American, but the damage kept accumulating. Lullo pulled guard, again looking to find a submission from his back. Barboza got out and kept sending low kicks that dropped Lullo to the canvas at the close of the round, his leg devastated from the strikes.
Lullo came out trying to loosen his leg at the start of round three, but three more Barboza low kicks had Lullo unable to continue fighting, and referee Mark Fenell had finally seen enough and waved off the bout.
