Machida vs. Jackson Wiki Update Wiki

In the eleventh bout and main event of UFC 123, former light heavyweight champions Lyoto Machida and Quinton Jackson squared off. Machida was coming off of the only loss of his career, a loss to Mauricio Rua at UFC 113 six months earlier. Jackson was looking to rebound from his grudge match loss against Rashad Evans at UFC 114. The winner was not guaranteed a title shot but it would be a distinct possibility in such a high-profile pairing. Going for the nostalgia-factor, Jackson's entrance music was the theme song from the Pride Fighting Championships, the organization where he initially became an MMA star.

Jackson came out and closed the distance early, taking the center of the cage but not throwing the first strike. Machida landed a series of low kicks while Jackson stayed patient. Jackson stalked Machida down and finally was able to clinch up against the fence midway through the round. Jackson threw an effective uppercut as Machida broke free from the clinch, and Machida then landed a kick to the body. Machida pressed Jackson against the cage until the fighters separated with half a minute left. Jackson attempted to counter a Machida strike by coming forward with a combination, yet Machida used his superior footwork to back away and avoid all the punches as the close round ended.

Jackson again moved to the center of the cage to begin round two. Machida landed more low kicks and Jackson came forward and clinched up, landing a knee to the groin that resulted in a brief pause. Jackson lunged and missed with a left hook that Machida moved away from, but Jackson was able to quickly follow up with a clinch and then takedown. Machida wall-walked up to his feet where a left head kick was blocked by Jackson and countered with another uppercut. Jackson stumbled to the canvas yet it appeared to be a slip, and the fight remained extremely close.

Round three began with Jackson throwing his first low kick of the fight. Jackson lunged forward with punches but couldn't get close enough to land on his elusive foe. A pair of Machida punches had Jackson reeling and the Brazilian attacked with a flurry of knees from the clinch in an attempt to finish the fight. Jackson gamely brawled back but was taken down. Machida worked from half-guard, fighting to both pass guard as well as secure a kimura. Machida gained full mount and targeted an armbar but had to let go as Jackson prepared to land one of his trademark slams. Up to the feet with just forty seconds left, a final scramble saw Machida desperately look for a leg lock, but there was no time left to work. The final round almost certainly belonged to Machida, and the fighters stood and warmly embraced at the finish.

The judges scored the bout 29-28 Machida, 29-28 Jackson, and 29-28 Jackson, the winner by split decision.

Commenting to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interviews, "Machida whooped my ass, my coaches gonna get mad at me. He did a great job and I didn't do what I wanted to do... I think that's what the judges were thinking with me being the aggressor, but with the fight being so close I think Machida deserves a rematch... Machida is hard to hit, I'm trying to come back and knock him out but he's hard to hit... I think an immediate rematch would be the fair thing."

Machida, talking through his interpreter Ed Soares, commented "I did the best that I could tonight, but if the judges thought that Quinton won, that's what they saw... I'd like an immediate rematch also."
