This card featured two light heavyweight matches in it's main card, where it was announced by whoever won in the most impressive fashion would receive a title shot a UFC Light Heavyweight championship. Mauricio "Shogun" Run brawled with Brandon Vera before knocking him out in the fourth round and Lyoto Machida knocked out Ryan Bader in the second round of their fight. Machida was chosen as having the more impressive victory, as he displayed exciting allusiveness before a devastating knockout, while Rua seemed to tire in his fight and was clipped by several punches. However, neither fighter received a title shot, as they both turned down short notice fights when Dan Henderson injured his knee before UFC 151.
Also on the card, Joe Lauzon defeated Jamie Varner in a match of the year candidate, and Mike Swick returned from a two and a half year layoff.
