All Time Biggest Falls from Grace
***WORK IN PROGRESS*** From legends / champions / top contenders... to gatekeepers... or worse... Here are the biggest and saddest falls from grace/downfalls in mixed martial arts history. Fighters who's once brilliant careers that saw them reach some of the sports highest heights (title reigns, championship gold, title shots) were tarnished by damaging losses.

Scored one of MMA's biggest upset ever by putting an end to welterweight king Matt Hughes' reign that included five title defenses and a twelve-fight win streak, submitting him in the first round.
Lost to Hughes in the rematch and to future welterweight GOAT Georges St-Pierre before moving back down where he belonged at lightweight.
Resurected the lightweight division six years after losing to Jens Pulver for the inaugural title back when he only had three pro fights... Avenged the loss to Pulver before becoming the UFC's second two-division champion (alongside Randy Couture) by capturing the vacant lightweight title.
Defended the title one time before making a bold (and ill-fated) attempt at becoming the UFC's first ever fighter to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously and took a beating from pound-for-pound king Georges St-Pierre in an historic first clash of champions.
Went back down to lightweight and defended his title two more times, cementing himself as the best lightweight ever to date.

Lost a close controversial decision and the title to huge underdog and future legend Frankie Edgar in a massive upset. Failed to recapture the title in a rematch, getting swept on all scorecards.
Moved back up to welterweight for a rubber match against Matt Hughes and knocked him out in the first round in one final glorious moment.
Made the terrible decision to stay at welterweight, fought to a lackluster draw with top contender and former title challenger Jon Fitch before suffering one of the most saddening losing streak in the sport's history, losing all nine of his following fights, and most of them in devastating fashion.
Got beat up badly by a prime Nick Diaz and rising contender Rory MacDonald back-to-back, took a hiatus.
Came back and made his featherweight debut, unfortunately for an unnecessary third fight with Frankie Edgar, got beat up again and finished. Announced his retirement again.
Returned after two and a half years at 38 years old and got beat up and finished again by rising prospect Yair Rodriguez.
Almost tasted victory again when he dropped veteran Dennis Siver in the second round before getting beat up in the third round and lose a majority decision.
Returned to lightweight after a year and a half, suffered the first submission loss of his career against BJJ wizard Ryan Hall.
Lost one final time, dropping a decision to veteran Clay Guida before finally calling it a career at 40 years old.
On an even darker note, Penn found troubles outside the sport as well, having problems with alcohol, engaging in brawls at bars and strip clubs, getting knocked out cold in the streets, getting charged for DUIs, facing restraining orders after accusations of physical and sexual abuse from his estranged girlfriend.
Let's just hope the man can find peace and health before things get further out of control and turn into a tragedy.
Get back up BJ !

Winner of his first nine UFC fights including winning the UFC Heavyweight Champion in 2011 by knocking out Cain Velasquez in 64 seconds, defended the title against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.
π βΈ 21-9 / 6-8 (UFC)
Brutalized by Velasquez in the rematch and even worse in the rubber match.
