Yep, very close fight, tough to score.  I'd have to say Simpson is ahead, even though 20-18 doesn't really do it justice as far as how close it is.

Simpson should take the decision. I'd be 3 perfect had Hougland closed that submission in R2.

The third bout of UFC 132 saw Aaron "A-Train" Simpson take on the undefeated Brad Tavares in middleweight contest. Simpson came in the fight 4-2 in his prior UFC action, while Tavares was 2-0.

Tavares came out with a nice body kick and Simpson immediately dashed forward looking for a takedown. Tavares defended and found himself pressed against the cage as Simpson worked for a takedown and threw short strikes with his free hand. Simpson grinded away against the fence though couldn't land a takedown. Referee Josh Rosenthal broke the pair up with just over two minutes remaining. Tavares connected on a nice right hand though a moment later was again pressed against the cage. The final seconds saw some solid action as both fighters opened up with punches and Simpson made a final push for a takedown.

Tavares tagged Simpson early in round two, but he came forward too aggressively in the follow-up and lost position. Simpson snaked around to take the back standing, though again failed to capitalize with a takedown. Tavares had clearly focused on takedown defense in preparation for the fight, shutting down "A-Train" every time he dropped down or looked for a trip. Tavares dropped down and looked for a takedown of his own, slamming Simpson down in a shocking reversal. Simpson immediately jumped up and attacked with a guillotine choke, pressing Tavares into the corner as he searched for a tapout. Tavares held steady and was up to his feet a few moments later, a minute remaining in what was a grueling, wrestling-oriented matchup. The final seconds of the round saw Brad Tavares again utilize great defense to avoid being wrestled to the mat.

The third round opened with more striking action as Tavares landed some good punches and broke free from the first clinch. Simpson couldn't be held at bay for long and had him locked up against the fence once again. Takedown defense for Tavares remained fantastic late in the fight, and Simpson struggled for a clean takedown, unable to land one despite controlling the action. Referee Josh Rosenthal broke the fighters up with 40 seconds left and the fight seeming to be in control for Simpson. A double leg in the center of the cage finally landed for Simpson, Tavares scrambled to his feet, and the closing horn sounded.

All three judges scored the bout 30-27 for Aaron Simpson, the winner via unanimous decision.
