Clarke vs. Cholish Wiki Update Wiki

The opening bout of UFC 140 featured promotional newcomers Mitch Clarke and John Cholish facing off in the lightweight division.

Cholish quickly made it clear he wanted the fight on the ground but was stuffed twice in a row by Clarke. Clarke connected with some good strikes though Cholish did land a nice left. In a scramble Clarke took Cholish's back standing, only to have Cholish roll for a kneebar and ultimately get top position in Clarke's guard. Cholish landed an elbow then stood up and let Clarke back to the feet. Cholish, while not completely fluid on the feet, looked to have settled into a rhythm and looked sharper over the final segment of the round.

Cholish opened with a good right hand to start the second round. Clarke caught a Cholish low kick but couldn't take advantage or force his opponent off-balance. Cholish shot for a takedown and ended up with a bodylock, losing position when they pressed up against the fence. Cholish landed a solid right hand and the pair exchanged low kicks. Another good right hand landed from Cholish, and he followed it up a moment later with a successful takedown. Clarke was able to roll out, into turtled position, and up to his feet. Cholish, however, expertly transitioned to Clarke's back with a kimura, flattened him out, and unloaded with ground and pound that forced referee John McCarthy to wave off the fight.

The official end came at 4:36 of the second round for John Cholish. Speaking with Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Cholish commented, "Mitch is a great wrestler and a great opponent, and I was very lucky to fight him... It's just stuff we practice in the gym at Team Renzo Gracie... I'm just glad I was able to come out here and perform."
