Ebersole vs. Patrick Wiki Update Wiki

The ninth bout of UFC 140 featured Brian Ebersole taking on Claude Patrick in the welterweight division. Ebersole entered the cage with the "Tapout" logo shaved into his chest hair.

Ebersole threw a kick and then shot for a takedown, stuffed by Patrick in the center of the cage. Ebersole pressed Patrick against the fence and the fighters worked for position in the clinch. Ebersole got the fight down but was stuck in a guillotine choke. Ebersole gave the thumbs up sign and Patrick soon let go of the technique. Patrick escaped to his feet and Ebersole connected on a nice jab. Ebersole backed Patrick down with a combination of jabs and a body shot, looking to be the more confident fighter standing. The round ended in the clinch with Patrick getting the last shots in.

Patrick pressed the action to begin round two, backing Ebersole down with strikes but then missing on a takedown attempt. From the clinch Ebersole looked for a single leg takedown but it was well-defended by Patrick. In a relatively even round, Patrick caught a kick from Ebersole and nearly took the back standing. Patrick landed a pair of good uppercuts and shot for a takedown, stuffed by Ebersole in a tough round to score.

Patrick stuffed Ebersole's takedown attempts for the first few seconds of round three but lost balance and ended up on his back. Patrick squirmed up to his feet but Ebersole had his back and slammed him back down. Ebersole took his back while they kneeled against the fence, and while Patrick was able to free himself and get back to the clinch, the round was already three minutes in. Patrick was able to get top position and look for an anaconda choke, well-defended by Ebersole. One final submission attempt from Patrick at the end of another close round, and the horn sounded with neither fighter looking confident of victory.

The judges scored the fight 29-28 Ebersole, 29-28 Patrick, and 29-28 Ebersole, the winner via split decision. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Ebersole commented, "I was upset because I wasn't able to do a lot of the things I hoped to be able to do... I'm very thankful to get a decision in his hometown... in my martial arts experience the guillotine is a myth, I haven't been choked out by one, and the D'Arce choke wasn't close because he was too tired."
