Strikeforce in its very last breath goes out with a bang. Strikeforce presents "A Farewell To Arms"

Since 2006 Strikeforce has been entertaining the public with Mixed Martial Arts and now after the signing with ZUFFA, as of January 12th, 2013, Strikeforce shall be no more.

The Current Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nate "The Great" Marquardt shall defend is title against contender Tarec "Sponge" Saffiedine in the last Title Match in Strikeforce history.

For being a Non-UFC card this event is very stacked with other big named fighters. Other than the current SF Champion and former UFC title challenger Marquardt the card also includes, Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Winner Daniel "DC" Cormier, PRIDE FC Grand Prix Finalist Josh "The Warmaster" Barnett, BJJ Elite Jacare Souza, Dream Middleweight Grand Prix and former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi, Former US Army Ranger Tim Kennedy, and much much more.

There are some things that one should never try to defend.  When someone calls another a troll or gay, the intended victim can't respond without sounding bad.

It's like The Crane.  If done right, no can defend.

It wasn't the weight cut bill. It wasn't his t-level either. It was the guy he fought. Tarec slowed him down with some brutal leg kicks. It was a good game plan from Hendo and company. Nate just wasn't able to get in any kind of rythym. Sometimes it's just not your night.

Why didn't Greg Jackson tell him to start checking the leg kicks?

Because Greg Jackson wasn't in his corner. Trevor Wittman should have told him. Nate knew that already though. Why he didn't only he knows. My guess is he was willing to eat some leg kicks to land some shots of his own. It just didn't work out tonight for him. He'll be back.

That's probably the worst swelling and bruising on a leg I've ever seen from leg kicks. Pure nasty..

Marquardt limped to his seat on the stage at the post-fight news conference at Chesapeake Energy Arena. When the press conference was over, after sitting for 30 minutes during the proceedings with ice on the leg, he needed help walking out, the leg getting more purple after the fight than it even appeared during the fight itself after Saffiedine continued to attack it throughout the 25 minutes.

JM, thanks for the links and gifs. Up arrows/thumbs.

Also, I just want to add about the Saffiedine vs. Marquardt fight that despite being beaten thoroughly I give Nate a tremendous amount of credit in the loss for his heart and determination to keep fighting on basically one leg. Tough loss, but he'll be back strong. On the other side, the future looks brighter for Tarec Saffiedine than almost anyone thought after closing out the last Strikeforce event ever by winning the belt.

The question now is, will Saffiedine be able to replicate his success in the UFC. Anytime you beat a fighter of Nate's caliber the way that Saffiedine did after most people wrote him off, you have to wonder:

Sign of things to come? Or a one time spectacular performance? I hope it's the former. Thoughts, people?

I woke up today surprised on two counts.

1) Saffiedine won.
2) I picked Saffiedine.

I'll take it.
