This was Lyoto Machida's second fight at 185 lb. and Gegard Mousasi's first since the Dream 6: Middleweight GP 2008 Finals. Both fighters had previously fought in the light heavyweight division and even the heavyweight division. This was Mousasi's first real test in the UFC, and he comes into this fight very experienced with 39 pro fights to his credit. His first UFC bout was set for a main event at 205 lb. with Alexander Gustafsson but was cancelled due to a cut Alex sustained in training shortly before UFC on FUEL TV 9 in Sweden and he instead fought Ilir Latifi who he beat by unanimous decision. After a highly techncal fight, Machida would emerge with the unanimous decision win. The fight won "Fight of the Night" honors.

In the co-main event, decorated bjj whiz Ronaldo Souza fought the underdog Francis Carmont who came into the match with an 11 fight win streak, with six of those wins coming in the UFC. Souza would dominate much of the fight from back control on the way to a unanimous decision win over a visibly frustrated Carmont.
