Johnson vs. Yamamoto Wiki Update Wiki

In the fourth bout of UFC 126 and the only to air on a special Facebook.com preliminary broadcast prior to the Spike TV prelims, Demetrious Johnson took on Kid Yamamoto. Johnson was making his UFC debut after the 135 pound division was added to the organization, yet had gone 2-1 in WEC competition in what was essentially the same division. Yamamoto was making his Zuffa and UFC debut after a long career of K1-Hero's and other Japanese competition.

The fighters began cautiously to begin round one, keeping distance from each other as Johnson darted in with jabs and low kicks. Johnson found some success with his low kicks while Yamamoto countered effectively. Yamamoto whiffed on a big right hook, enabling Johnson to duck and score a takedown, yet Yamamoto quickly escaped to his feet. A similar sequence played out again a moment later, and Johnson landed in Johnson's half-guard. Yamamoto escaped again, and a big exchange ensued as the fighters scrambled and landed up against the fence. Johnson took Yamamoto down again with 30 seconds left in the opening round. A small mouse formed over the right eye of "Mighty Mouse."

Johnson began round two with a pair of low outside left kicks. Yamamoto looked for a takedown yet couldn't quite get Johnson down. Johnson's next low kick caught Yamamoto in the groin resulting in a brief pause. Another beautifully-timed takedown came from Johnson, yet Yamamoto flipped him over during the transition and again immediately stood up. Johnson began to land on more of his strikes and got two more takedowns that Yamamoto escaped from. During a scramble where Johnson was in the process of standing back up, Yamamoto nailed a hard knee to the head that caused a brief moment of confusion as the fighters paused, uncertain if it was a legal blow or not.

Yamamoto shrugged off Johnson's first takedown attempt in round three, but fell victim to the next. Still, despite Johnson's ability to repeatedly score takedowns, Yamamoto had little difficulty getting back to his feet. Johnson's pace was unrelenting and had Yamamoto mostly guessing as to what level Johnson would be coming in from. Yamamoto landed some good individual punches yet it was Johnson who dictated the pace of the fight. The round ended with Johnson in top position working hard to keep Yamamoto on his back and likely earning himself a clear-cut victory.

The judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 in favor of Demetrious Johnson. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Johnson commented, "He's a very tough guy, he has good striking and hits hard... if I overextend I'm going to get knocked out from that right hook of his."
