WEC 48 Wiki
WEC 48 marked the first time a WEC event aired live on Pay Per View, and with a heavy promotional backing by parent company Zuffa, was by far the biggest WEC event to date in the promotion’s history.
WEC 48 featured a highly anticipated Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and Urijah Faber as well as the Lightweight Championship rematch between Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone. In the main event, Aldo defended his title with a dominant Unanimous Decision over Faber, breaking down “The California Kid” with an endless series of leg kicks, while Henderson destroyed Cerrone with a first-round submission.
On the Prelims special, which aired live on Spike TV prior to the event, featherweight contenders Leonard Garcia and the virtually unknown (to North American audiences) “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung delivered one of the best fights in years with a three-round war that lead directly into the Pay Per View broadcast.
In an echo of the Ultimate Fighter’s legendary live season one Finale between Stephan Bonner and Forrest Griffin years earlier, Garcia and Jung’s ridiculous go-for-broke war, which seemed to emerge out of nowhere, was a reminder that live televised MMA could still captivate with unexpected drama and alter the courses of both careers and promotions.
