Maybe it's copium, but at least a couple of those downs in the first was Charlie doing the classic Gracie take a blow and drop on your back to get a grappling exchange going.

I'm not someone who was using the "he has no heart" narrative, so I don't really feel the urge to focus on him proving that wrong.

But my example was Tony Ferguson, who has all the heart in the world. If I keep seeing strikers knock him pillar to post for extended periods of the fight, I'm going to keep assuming someone will eventually put the lights fully out. Both Chandler and Poirier had chances. Chandler is an idiot and Poirier got his glove grabbed then reversed into full mount for a round. And Gaethje might be the most meat headed of them all, so he might not even be the guy to do it. But there's an obvious pattern here.

Not sure where those 4 knockdowns came from. I saw 1. Who cares if he gets knocked down, if he can keep fighting then it’s no problem

It’s actually advantageous if Charles gets knocked down; it means the opponent either goes into his guard trying to get a finish or they don’t and he gets to recover

lol getting removed from your feet by a punch is not the same as successfully pulling guard. Chandler dove right in like a dummy, Dustin didn't. And had Oliveira not stuck his fingers into Dustin's glove twice for an extended period (heres a clip: https://twitter.com/Dial5_/status/1469918108861272066?s=20 ) he wouldnt have gotten pulled in either.

It’s not but most fighters are bloodthirsty and are gonna try to ko him which ends up with them on the ground for Charles which he loves. The foul is egregious but neither herb or Dustin said anything so yeah

If I thought Oliveria was pulling guard I'd say so, the Gracies used to oversell punches and pretend trip themselves back in the day quite often. It's clear Oliveria was content to get on his back, even the biggest knock down for Porirer Oliveria takes one knee than decide to go plant his back onto the mat.

I think whether or not it ends up working out, getting punched in the head and collapsing is a bad thing. Especially repeatedly over a span of years. But thats just me.

lol this isn't even the point I'm trying to make. But he's been stopped by punches four times and was hurt bad on the feet in his last two. Before we can extrapolate on that, we've gotta acknowledge that we're living in the same reality here...

edit: ill just go ahead and add my rephrased actual point, once we can agree that we live in the world where Oliveira has been hurt by punches more often than most* during his career, that it also happened significantly in his two title fights seems like a worthwhile takeaway when thinking about the longevity of his reign. Guys who get nearly knocked out on the way to winning tend not to have five title defenses. And here comes another brawler with big power in the next fight. I just think that's something to jot down in the postfight notes.

Yeah it definitely is; especially when he fights gaethje. But it didn’t really look like he was hurt all that bad by poirier. It was a delayed reaction and even then he didn’t look that phased. I think it’s similar to what casual said about the gracies overreacting to punches. Charles probably expects people to assume he’ll quit so when he falls down people try to go for the finish

Maaaybe. But I think we have a big enough sample size now, and it doesn't seem like Charles is faking getting hurt by head punches.

He was choosing to box with Poirier, and I think he would have preferred staying upright and winning those exchanges, rather than getting dropped and improvising.

Yeah maybe. We’ll never truely know because we aren’t Charles. Either way, he’s still winning fights so I can’t complain lol

Charles was definitely hurt. Dustin hits hard. That's why he came out and started firing at range and pressing the grappling in R2. Pocket fighting with Poirier is a sure way to get KO'ed.

I also think the fight would have looked a whole lot different if Charles hadn't glove-hooked.

I don’t wanna sound like a fanboy, but yeah, Dustin up 1-0, standing over a dazed Oliveira, without the glove grab the momentum was all Poirier. That moment changed everything. Maybe it would have happened anyway, maybe Dustin was fading. But the fight we were watching was going one way, then an illegal move and no refereeing, then the fight was going the other way.
