Freire vs. Lowe Wiki Update Wiki
In the third bout of Fight For The Troops 2, and the first to air on the preliminary card internet stream, Willamy Freire took on Waylon Lowe. Freire was a highly touted prospect coming out of the Nova Uniao camp from Brazil and making his UFC debut. Lowe came in 1-1 in his prior UFC bouts.
The opening round saw Lowe set up a takedown with a jab and plant Freire on his back against the fence. Lowe, working from within the guard, opened up and landed a handful of punches and elbows. Freire looked to throw a few elbows off of his back to Lowe's head, and then switched to set up a kimura on Lowe's right arm. Freire continued trying to set up the submission, only to have referee Dan Miragliotta stand the fighters up, much to the dismay of commentator Joe Rogan, who felt Freire should have had the opportunity to keep working for the submission. Freire threw a high kick back on the feet yet Lowe came back with a punch that dropped Freire and brought the fight back to the ground. Lowe worked from top position in guard to try and land more ground and pound as the round expired, almost certainly in favor of Lowe.
Lowe landed a pair of lunging hooks early in round two and pressed forward to try and work a double-leg takedown. Freire defended and separated, only to be taken down cleanly in the next striking exchange. Freire found his most dangerous move of the fight thus far, nearly getting Lowe into a triangle. Lowe lifted up and slammed his way out of the submission, and shortly after made his way to half-guard. The referee stood the pair back up with 90 seconds left in the round. Freire landed a pair of inside low kicks but was again taken down. The round ended with Lowe again likely coming out ahead on the scorecards.
The third and final round began with Freire attacking with a variety of strikes but Lowe holding a clear advantage in power. Freire slid his way out of a takedown attempt and then brushed off another, leaving Lowe sitting on his knees and challenging Freire to punch. Freire obliged, and in the ensuing scramble Lowe ended up on his back eating elbows and punches. A winded Lowe got back to his feet with under two minutes remaining and promptly scored another takedown back to top position. Lowe escaped from another kimura and Freire desperately tried again to lock up the arm to no avail.
The judges unanimously scored the fight 29-28 for Waylon Lowe.
