The Main Event of UFC on Versus 3 pitted top welterweights Martin Kampmann and Diego Sanchez.


The fighters started out cautiously in the opening seconds, with Kampmann the first to begin opening up. Sanchez begins to throw near the one minute mark. Both men showing respect. Kampmann connects with a heavy straight right near the 3:30 mark that hurts Sanchez. Sanchez recovers and looks to hit the switch from a tie-up, but Kampmann shrugs it off. The fighters resume the standup battle and Sanchez is already busted up. Kampmann is connecting with clean shots and shrugging off the takedowns. Sanchez is a bloody mess as the horn sounds to end round one.


Round two begins with Sanchez again unable to secure the takedown. On the outside, Sanchez is getting picked apart. His right eye begins to close in addition to cuts on the nose and mouth. A big exchange near the two minute mark hurts Kampmann and momentarily buckles his knees. Both fighters are now cut with Kampmann bleeding from the right eye. Good hard shots exchanged and Kampmann is winning the trades, but slowing down. Kampmann gets tagged again late as the momentum begins to change late in the round.


Round three begins with both men landing once again. Sanchez is having more success, but shoots again to no avail. Sanchez connects again hard at the midway point of the round. Sanchez finally gets his first takedown near the two minute mark but Kampmann stands back up quickly. Kampmann has lost much of his sting. In the final minute Kampmann looks to have injured his hand and shakes it out. Diego is cut to tatters across his face as a wild and close affair draws to a close.


The judges score the fight a Unanimous Decision for Diego Sanchez, 29-28. The crowd boos heavily as a horrifically bloodied Sanchez is interviewed by Joe Rogan. "I think I won the fight hands down" said a disappointed Martin Kampmann as the UFC on Versus 3 drew to a close.
