I don't know if O'Malley is good enough to be a champ either. He hasn't been tested yet. Munhoz will be his first real test imo. I'm more confident saying that Paddy will never be champ. I don't think that would matter to him anyways. Since he's making bank without fighting.

In regards to Du Plessis, he is a grappler first with a very good pass game and aggressive chained submissions. If he gets it to the ground Tavares could be in big trouble. But getting it there is a problem as Tavares has some of the best takedown defence in the division. I can't see him catching Tavares in a guillotine.
Striking, I actually give the edge to Tavares who is more technical and has better boxing. And if you watch Du Plessis you will see he has good counter striking, good leg kicks with both legs but his entries are wild and he rushes forward throwing long strikes but with his chin exposed. His striking defence looks very suspect. The issue there is he seems to have a good chin and I don't think Tavares has a lot of knock out power to put him out.
If you look at strength of schedule Tavares wins hands down, he has been in the UFC forever and has fought everyone. Du Plessis wins are not that good in the UFC. But as Ayy points out outside the UFC he has some very good wins including Soldic.
Overall I think this is mainly going to be a striking battle. So who is the better striker? if volume was the winning criteria I would give it to Tavares. But if damage is the criteria then Du Plessis. For me what strikes me is that Du Plessis has a lot of power and Tavares has been knocked out a few times before.
Even the head kick loss to Edmun Shabazyan he got rocked with punches first.
So overall leaning to Du Plessis by knockout. But it's very close.
Please let me know what you think of my analysis 🙏
