I don't care much for TKO stoppages in the final 10 seconds but his eyes were closed for the final 6-8 punches. Can't `intelligently` defend yourself that way.
I don't think Shamil was BOUTTHATLYFE today.

Shamil didn't even protest it so maybe he was hurt.

That refs head would have exploded like in scanners if he were reffing the Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar rematch, or the Cheick Kongo vs Pat Barry fight. That ref would be scarred for the rest of his life. Game over man.

I must admit, I have seen worse stoppages than this. way worse. Think about how long before Shamil couldn't take it anymore if there were more time left in the round?

I wouldn't say he was intelligently defending himself. He was more flailing his arms about. I don't think he was in any great physical danger, but he still wasn't defending himself well. It doesn't matter if there is two minutes left in a fight or ten seconds, if you aren't intelligently defending, the fight should be stopped. I don't feel strongly either way about that call, so meh.

Props to Johnson for getting Shamil in a terrible spot. I mean, if that were happening with a minute left in the round I can understand stepping in maybe, but with 3 seconds left in the round? The guy needs to be ******' basically out if you're going to stop a fight that close to the end of a round IMO.

I picked Maynard by decision because I think he MIGHT go back to wrestle-*******. If he decides to stand, he'll probably get tko'd. Maynard's felt over-the-hill ever since the Edgar fight. Not at all confident with my pick there.

It doesn't matter if there is two minutes left in a fight or ten seconds, if you aren't intelligently defending, the fight should be stopped.
The definition of "intelligently defending" is so vague and leaves so much room for personal interpretation. I mean, he was mounted by a 260 lb man that was throwing bombs at him and there were 15 or so seconds left in the round. Is it not arguable that the intelligent thing to do in that spot is bite down on the mouth piece, try to shield your face as best as you can, and survive those 15 seconds without getting KO'd so you can get your break, and your reset on the feet in the next round? Just a difficult call to make IMO, and I disagree about the two minutes or ten seconds thing. A stoppage like that in a title fight would spark such outrage. Like Herb Dean stopping the Barao and Faber rematch. Judgment calls that are not technically wrong, but that I borderline don't agree with. If that makes sense. I personally probably would have let both fights go on, but, I'm not going to say the ref who had a better angle and view of everything happening than I did, was wrong to make that judgment call. Anyway, like you said, not that important and no real strong feelings either way toward the stoppage.

Maynard has the skills on paper to win this, but I have no faith that chin of his.

I literally saw Shamil solving complex equations in his head while Johnson was hitting him, if that's not intelligent I don't know what is

@cthulu I respect that opinion. Ultimately, due to the vagaries of "intelligently defend" it comes down to personal choice/opinion for each ref. I personally would probably have stopped it, but letting it go is not some objectively wrong choice either. I can definitely understand the pressure for something like that with a title-fight to let it go a bit longer too.

I wanted to pick Maynard. He was one of my favorite fighters for a while around the time of the Frankie rematch (that I think he won to this day) and then he started laying turds in fights, because he stopped using his main weapon. Pearson, Diaz, and TJ Grant are such superior fighters compared to Yakolev though. I hope Gray wins, and I'm thinking he will now. Should have taken him. I think only a display of Roy Nelson like fight IQ will cost Maynard this fight. He only loses if he doesn't use his wrestling. WAR BULLY

Maynard has the worst fight IQ. Does his game plan go beyond ducking his head and winging right hands?
