Fukuda vs. Philippou Wiki Update Wiki

The third bout of UFC 148 saw Riki Fukuda take on Costa Philippou in the middleweight division.

The fighters exchanged strikes early and both had success before Fukuda dove in and dragged Philippou to the mat. Philippou cage-walked to his feet and the two were tentative in the ensuing boxing exchanges. Philippou seemed to have trouble finding his range against the Southpaw, but he did some damage to Fukuda's left eye.

Philippou seemed to be finding his range at the start of the second, landing glancing punches as Fukuda moved forward behind punches. Philippou was doing some damage and stuffed some quick takedown attempts by the bloody Fukuda. Fukuda landed some heavy body kicks midway through the round with a hard left cross behind it. Fukuda landed another big left and Philippou backed him off with a right, and both men were landing single shots with power.

Fukuda pushed forward, showing some urgency in the third and backing Philippou up with nice punches before pushing him into the fence. The fighters separated and Philippou began to stick and move. Philippou stuffed a deep takedown and continued to land accurately while avoiding Fukuda's counters. Philippou took a bag eye gouge that prompted a halt to the contest as the fighter was examined by the doctor. The damage was moderate to Philippou's eye but he decided to continue anyway. Philippou charged forward on the restart and landed some big combos, looking angry over the eye poke.

The judges scored the bout 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 for Philippou, giving him the Unanimous Decision victory.
