McDonald vs. Figueroa Wiki Update Wiki
Big punching exchanges start off round one. McDonald is getting the better but can't seize a lasting advantage and backs off. McDonald looks crisper out of the gate. McDonald controls the action on the feet with leg kicks and secures the takedown, where he works from Figueroa's guard. McDonald cracks Figueroa heavily at the end of the round for a punctuation mark to a dominant round.
Round two McDonald gets an early takedown. Figueroa looks for a leglock, but misses and McDonald takes his back where he nearly sinks in the RNC. McDonald transitions cleverly to a triangle/armbar combination but Figueroa sneaks his way out and ends up on top. McDonald again nearly finishes with the combination but Figueroa has no quit in him, and slowly works his way loose. Action-packed round ends with Figueroa finding his first success of the fight, some punches from the ground on McDonald.
Round three of a great fight begins with McDonald looking gassed from the triangle attempts. Big exchanges are coming from the exhausted fighters. Both are all heart. McDonald gets stung by a punch but retaliates with a takedown that lands him in Figueroa's guard. Figueroa stands, but a second takedown by McDonald returns him to the canvas. Figueroa reverses, and ends up on top himself. Josh Rosenthal stands them up and Figueroa is the fresher fighter. McDonald, though, lands another double leg for his third takedown of the round. One of the best bouts of 2011 to date ends with McDonald in Figueroa's guard and both fighters hug.
The judges score the contest a Unanimous Decision in favor of the UFC's youngest fighter, Michael "Mayday" McDonald. The scores are 30-27 across the board.
