really? who did you want him to fight? or are you just going to say anyone he beats wasn't good enough?

if they were protecting him then how come he ended up facing Dan Henderson?

@buffalo that was 2 1/2 years ago in a title eliminator fight after coaching opposite Hendo on TUF.  That was the final step before fighting for the title... and look how that worked out for him.

Zuffa brass saw that Bisping would never get close to another title shot again if they matched him in really tough fights... Okami, Marquardt, Sonnen, Maia etc.  So they've built him slowly in winnable fights.  He's been the favorite in his last 4.

Now he's back to where he was before UFC 100 against Hendo.  The UFC has no choice now but to give him a stiff test... and if he wins, he'll get his shot.

He fought those "easy" fights because he lost to Wanderlei. Had he won against Wanderlei he would have had stiffer competeition sooner. He's fightin Sonnen next.

i don't want to misunderstand you greg, and i have a lot of respect for you but it sounds like you might be saying that if bisping fights contenders those are give-mes, and if he fights a contender like sonnen he doesn't deserve the opportunity.

Sonnen is fighting Munoz on next FOX card.  The winner of that will likely fight Silva.

I think the UFC would prefer to give Bisping a grappler.  Palhares if he beats Massenzio at 142, or Demian Maia. Both would be difficult for Bisping, but at least he'd have the expected edge in striking and a good shot to win.

They could also give him the Belfort vs Rumble winner.

He fought those "easy" fights because he lost to Wanderlei.

I didn't call them easy. I called them winnable where he was the favorite. There are no easy fights. It's still the UFC.

Had he won to Wanderlei he would have had stiffer competeition sooner.

But he lost, again falling short when he wasn't the favorite against one of the better guys at middleweight.  The Wanderlei fight tells you everything you need to know about where Bisping stands in the division.

He's fightin Sonnen next.

Sonnen is fighting Munoz.

i don't want to misunderstand you greg, and i have a lot of respect for you but it sounds like you might be saying that if bisping fights contenders those are give-mes, and if he fights a contender like sonnen he doesn't deserve the oportunity.

Not sure what you mean.  Look, I don't have anything against Bisping. It's just the cold, hard truth that he isn't a top-5 middleweight and the UFC is trying to figure out how to deal with that.

After losing to Wanderlei, Bisping has fought four people. Dan Miller (grappler with no way to get it to the ground), Akiyama (grappler with no gas tank, chooses to strike), Jorge Rivera (one dimensional brawler, who bisping beat via illegal knee) and Miller (one dimensional grappler with no gas tank apparently).

When was the last time Bisping fought a decent striker? Wanderlei, and he got beat 3 times in one fight. Before that? Henderson, we know how that ended.

As soon as Bisping beats someone who is top 25 I will be impressed. When he beats a decent striker I may be impressed. As long as Vitor, Maia, Munoz, Sonnen, Palhares, Okami, hell even Brian Stann exist, Bisping doesn't deserve a title shot. He needs to beat one of them.

Yeah it was strange. Rogan and Dana are both feeding us a story right now. Dana tweeted "that was the most one side fight I've ever seen" ... which is crazy.

Oh i see. So if Bisping fights a guy who is more of a grappler he usually wins, if he fights a guy who is mostly a striker he probably won't. I hadn't made that connection before. I'm not being sarcastic either. The MW division is confusing.

I thought sonnen said he was not fighting munoz

Yeah, there was a more one sided fight (several actually) earlier that night. I HOPE Bisping is getting a title shot. I'm not referring to Buffalo Ben here because he's a good guy and I agree with most of what he says, but his fans are crazy and they need to see the difference between Bisping and the elite.

Rivera, Akiyama, Dan Miller, and Mayhem are all good, legit wins.  They're just not elite wins.

I think @mino characterizes them a little too harshly.  They're good UFC-level fighters.  But his next point is correct - if Bisping wants to be considered an elite fighter he needs to fight and beat other elite fighters.

I don't really understand this post and maybe I should approach this topic tomorrow when I'm more sober, but I don't think Bisping is an elite striker and will lose to every elite striker without a gas tank. Bisping has good cardio, I'll give him that. He'll lose to a lot of grapplers (Munoz, Maia, Palhares, Sonnen) but they have to be guys who present a threat on the feet or that can get him on the ground.
