Spang vs. Legere Jr. Wiki Update Wiki

The second bout of Strikeforce: Rockhold vs Jardine featured Chris Spang taking on Ricky Legere Jr. in the welterweight division.

Spang attempted a push kick early and was taken down as a result. Legere worked on top inside the guard to land punches, but quickly had to defend an armbar attempt. Legere prevented Spang from getting back to his feet over the next three minutes, landing some ground and pound but mostly just controlling the positioning. Spang jumped back up with thirty seconds remaining, got caught up in the clinch defending another takedown, and latched on a nice guillotine choke in the process. Legere appeared to be stuck and in danger of submitting when the round came to an end.

Spang opened up the second round with big punches and a flying knee that again left him exposed to a takedown. Legere landed a nice elbow but couldn't generate a significant amount of offense. A scramble left Legere standing over Spang briefly and then back down into full guard. Referee Chris Tognoni called for a standup with two minutes remaining in the round, Spang whiffed on a spinning back fist and defended a takedown attempt from Legere. Legere lifted Spang up and slammed him to the mat with a minute left, closing out the round on top.

Spang had the space in the beginning of the third to open up with his best striking attacks to that point in the fight. Down 2 rounds to 1, however, he likely needed a finish to come out on top. 90 seconds into the round, Legere once again was able to connect on a takedown. Spang made his way up to the feet with two minutes left but Legere was all over him, pressing him against the fence and landing another takedown. Spang kicked Legere off, jumped to his feet, and sprawled out of a takedown attempt. It gave Spang an opening to take Legere's back, where he desperately worked to sink in a rear naked choke. Legere escaped the submission and in the final scramble achieved full mount on Spang.

The judges unanimously scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Legere.
