Lindland vs. Belfort Wiki Update Wiki

Known simply as “The Phenom” during the early years of his career, Brazilian knockout artist Vitor Belfort had fallen hard from grace with a series of disappointing losses to some of the premier light heavyweights in the world. In 2008, determined to make a comeback, Belfort made the cut to 185 lbs. and looked like his old self, knocking out Terry Martin in his debut for Affliction.

Six months later, he was matched up with international MMA veteran and Olympic silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland in his sophomore effort with the promotion. Heading into the fight, Belfort was a slight underdog. While he clearly possessed the knockout power and boxing skill to defeat Lindland, the wrestler’s takedown skills and conditioning were aspects of the game that Belfort had struggled with throughout his career.

After a brief feeling-out period, Lindland attacked a circling Belfort with a right hand. Belfort, responding with the uncanny speed and reflexes that plagued opponents earlier in his career, countered with a short left hook. The punch landed, and Lindland was unconscious before he hit the mat. The knockout itself was brutal; the immediate aftermath was scary. Lindland remained out cold for an extended period of time, and when he finally came to, he remained completely disoriented for minutes, staring vacantly ahead.

The victory over Lindland was the most impressive and relevant in years for Brazil’s “Phenom.” Following the victory, and the collapse of Affliction in July of 2009, Belfort was invited to rejoin the UFC, where he unloaded more dynamite on former champ Rich Franklin.
