Arlovski vs. Emelianenko Wiki Update Wiki

Long considered the best heavyweight fighter in MMA history, Fedor Emelianenko had been criticized in 2007 and 2008 for facing exhibition-caliber competition instead of the best in the heavyweight division. In January of 2009, that all changed, when Fedor faced former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski for the WAMMA Heavyweight Championship, and flattened the Belarusian in the first round.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” Arlovski said before the fight. “I just want to be the champion, to get the belt.” “I try to do whatever God’s will is,” Emelianenko said. “If he gives me the strength to win, then that’s wonderful, but I try to contain my emotions with respect for God because at any time, the tables can turn.” Andrei Arlovski made his way to the ring first. Jimmy Smith: “Andrei Arlovski is the real deal, and a lot of people think that if anyone can knock off Fedor, it’s Arlovski.” Emelianenko made his way to the ring next, looking as calm and stoic as ever. Smith: “Most people think he is the best ground and pound fighter in the sport; if he gets Arlovski on the bottom he’s in trouble.”

Arlovski controlled the range for the first minute or two of the fight, and peppered Emelianenko with kicks to the legs and body. But after one slip-up 3:14 into the fight, Arlovski suddenly found himself face-down and out cold as a result of one of the Russian’s crushing right hands. Smith: “I do not believe it; Arlovski is still out on his stomach—they’re helping him up right now.” The reaction from fans in attendance and watching at home was equally dumbfounded, as the lightning fast events became clear only once the Jumbotron replayed them. Arlovski had bullrushed Emelianenko against the ropes, attempting a sloppy flying knee, and “The Last Emperor” coolly leveled him with one clean overhand shot.

Following the knockout win over Arlovski, much of the criticism of Fedor dissipated, and eight months later, he duplicated the stunning knockout on national television when he disposed of undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers in the second round with another crushing right hand.
