My MMA Rankings
All Time Greatest MMA Grapplers
Don't really understand what we're supposed to do with these lists to be honest. Is it about who has achieved the most success, or who has the most skill in MMA grappling? I'll go with the latter.
-
1
- Ronaldo Souza
- "Jacaré"
- 26-10-0, 1 NC
-
He has a winning record over Maia in Jiu-Jitsu, so he is rightfully ranked higher.
-
2
- Roger Gracie
- 8-2-0
-
I'm not a big fan of his, but he is clearly amazing on the ground.
-
3
- Demian Maia
- 28-11-0
-
One of my favorite grapplers in mma. I don't give anyone a chance with him on the ground.
-
4
- Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira
- "Minotauro"
- 34-10-1, 1 NC
-
Rodrigo has submitted a great number of big names, including Cro Cop, Coleman and Henderson. His groundwork is beautiful.
-
5
- Murilo Bustamante
- "Bust A Move"
- 15-8-1
-
Can't believe I left him out until now...
-
6
- Kazushi Sakuraba
- "The Gracie Hunter"
- 26-17-1, 2 NC
-
Great single leg, spectacular ground game, submitted Renzo, out grappled Royce. (He should be ranked higher than Royce)
-
7
- Paulo Filho
- "Ely"
- 24-6-3
-
If Filho didn't have so many personal problems he really could have been an all-time great.
-
8
- Shinya Aoki
- "Tobikan Judan"
- 48-11-0, 1 NC
-
I can't stand him, but it's undeniable that he is a phenom on the ground.
-
9
- BJ Penn
- "The Prodigy"
- 16-14-2
-
If BJ wasn't so lazy, I don't think he'd have 3 losses on his record. But he is. Had he gameplanned for Edgar, I don't think he would have lost to him. When he decided to eventually take Edgar down, he took his back almost immediately. He also has some great submission wins, like Hughes, which was very impressive.
-
10
- Rousimar Palhares
- "Toquinho"
- 19-13-1
-
Nasty heel hook, and great submissions. My dream fight is Toquinho against Maia or Jacare. I'm liking this guy better and better, he's unbelievable.
-
11
- Maurício Rua
- "Shogun" | 27-14-1
-
Why the hell is Shogun ranked so low on the consensus list? He has great grappling! Watch the Randleman fight for example. I guess he is so low because he only has one win by submission, but he has some great Jiu-jitsu, he uses it to sweep, or to get back to his feet, rather than using it to submit his opponents, for the most part.
-
12
- Georges St-Pierre
- "Rush" | 26-2-0
-
Some of the best wrestling in MMA, maybe the best. (If you're wondering why he's ranked at 10, and not higher, it's because he should be using his grappling for more than just passing and staying on top, he should be submitting people. After he couldn't pull the trigger on Hardy, I have some doubts at to whether he should even be in the top 10.
-
13
- Fedor Emelianenko
- "The Last Emperor" | 40-7-0, 1 NC
-
No one else could avoid getting submitted in Rodrigo's guard for a whole fight.
-
14
- Jon Fitch
- 32-8-2, 1 NC
-
He needs to get a little better, but he is clearly un-submittable, and a great wrestler too.
-
15
- Royce Gracie
- 15-2-3
-
Royce is pretty low on my list because I think compared to the guys today, he'd get killed on the floor. However, he gets bonus points for being the first ever to dominate with Jiu Jitsu
-
16
- Fabrício Werdum
- "Vai Cavalo" | 24-9-1, 1 NC
