Well this card has become an absolute nightmare over the past couple weeks...

Despite multiple fight cancellations and fighters pulling out, as well as the arrest of the sports #1 draw in Conor McGregor for being a moron, UFC 223 will still go on as Al Iaquinta will fill in to take on Khabib after Max Holloway missed weight.  Can Raging Al follow in the foot steps of his trainer Matt Serra and pull off a monumental upset over the undefeated Dagestani in Brooklyn, or will he become just another victim to Khabib's brutal sambo wrestling?  Also on tap is the rematch for the women's strawweight crown as Rose Namajunas defends against the former champ Joanna Jedrezjczyk, as well as fights featuring hot prospects like Renato Carneiro and Zabit Magomedshapirov and vets like Evan Dunham and Joe Lauzon.

Fight card starts at 8 PM EST on FS1 and switches over to PPV around 10 PM EST.

Let's do this ****!

So i've been travelling and been very busy. Didn't have the time to check MMA news for almost 2 weeks. I'm also not on Twitter or in a country where MMA is popular so the McGregor meltdown didn't make the news here and flew under my radar.

Was so looking forward to Tony vs Khabib and this whole card and then i just found out about all this **** today.

Hell yeah^

Ortega is likely going to move up to 155 someday anyway, Khabib vs Ortega will be sick.

Hopefully they put the Holloway vs Ortega fight as the main event at UFC 227. That Dillashaw vs Garbrandt rematch doesn't really make sense to me. Let Garbrandt fight a guy like Assuancao first or something, but i guess the UFC needs to fill up their calendar.

Anyway, here are my picks for tonight. I'm picking Raging Al with a first round KO. This is not a logical pick and there is no way i would have picked him under any other circumstance but considering everything that went down this week nothing makes sense anymore.

You're right TJ vs Cody 2 makes no sense. People hate hearing this but DJ should've taken the TJ fight, he'd probably be the favorite as well. Why not cement a legacy like other champs; BJ Penn or Anderson Silva for fighting out of their weight to truly prove they're a P4P great.

People will counter with the argument that champions should only fight contenders and not other champions in superfights and that is true but there are no clear cut contenders in either division, same with the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions, that is why Stipe and DC are fighting.

I have no problem with Demetrious defending his flyweight belt against Cejudo another time, but don't start complaining afterwards about not getting paid enough or not enough people are paying for your PPV. You had the champion of another division willing to cut down and probably deplete himself to the point that it could affect his performance and you still didn't take the fight.

Meanwhile we have badasses like Ortega & Holloway offering to step up on 6 days notice to fight the animal that is Khabib Nurmagomedov. Those are the guys that the fans are going to cherish after they are gone.

Think what you will of McGregor, at least he was not afraid of fighting a bigger man (on short notice btw) and went up in weight to challenge for a second title.

^And that's the thing I bring up as well that while BJ and Anderson definitely showed balls, they didn't clear out their divisons, DJ has already. You hit the nail on the head by saying that DJ has cleared out the division, there is no other fights except rematches or Benavidez and bantamweight is pretty held up at the moment with Cruz out again and Rivera vs Moraes for the next title shot.

The Garbrandt and Cejudo rematches are both far too soon to be happening, especially DJ vs Cejudo 2, because Cejudo literally got smoked like one of Snoop Dogg's blunts, that fight has no intrigue. Flyweight is a division that's been cleared out but DJ refuses to accept that or test himself or put his P4P #1 moniker on the line which is a huge reason I'm bored of his fights now, his fights now are like watching a puppy fight a pitbull, it's just not fun to watch imo.

mikey, I agree in principle with your post but since we have a half hour 'til the fights, allow me to nitpick:

1) As Bill Burgess convinced me, quick fights can often mask reality and Cejudo very obviously looked improved in his last couple of fights.

2) DJ fights are great if for nothing else as instructional videos because he truly does everything so well

and 3) unlike other "great" champions who clearly had a size and/or athletic advantage over almost all or their opposition, DJ has to be one of the smallest FLWs and has already given rematches to the 2 opponents who gave him his 2 closest matches (Joe B & Uncle Creepy) and neither of those was anywhere near as close as Jones/Gustafsson.

1) Agreed, but I think we both agree Cejudo is going to get owned again, right?
2) Also agreed, from a technical standpoint, very fun and insightful to watch. I personally am just not interested anymore to watch DJ wipe the floor with dudes he's already beaten.
3) I think that's subjective since it's in the midgetweight division, they're all pretty manlet-ish.

Also agree Jones should've given Gus a rematch either right away or within 1 win.

Not a fan of Cejudo's style but I don't think a rematch would be a foregone conclusion and some of the best fghts are Flyweight like Smolka/Nguyen. Horiguchi would probably have made the most exciting rematch and had a more exciting style so it's a shame they let him get away.
