John Phillips Wiki
John "The Welsh Wrecking Machine" Phillips Is a welsh professional MMA fighter formerly signed to the UFC and competing in the middleweight divison.
John made his debut in 2005 when he took on Nigel Whitear on the UK regionals. He would beat Nigel but would go on to lose his next bout against Jim Wallhead. After losing to Wallhead, John would win 13 out of his next 15 fights before getting his first real test as he was riding a five fight win streak. So at BAMMA 6: Kong vs. Ninja, Phillips would take on former two time UFC title challenger, Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg, unfortunately for Phillips he would suffer a cut which would force a stop to the contest only half way through round one, declaring Trigg the winner via cut stoppage.
Phillips would bounce back from the loss winning 7 out of his next 9 which lead to him getting signed to the UFC. His first fight was against Charles Byrd at UFC Fight Night 127. Byrd would shoot almost immediately, taking Phillips down. Phillips would find himself in a rear naked choke near the end of round one which forced him to tap.
Next John would fight Kevin Holland where he would find a bit more success but in the end John once again found himself in a rear naked choke, this time at the end of round 3. Coming off of two straight losses he took a fight against Jack Marshman, this time doing a lot better but would find himself on the wrong end of a split decision.
John was one fight away from being cut as he matched up with Alen Amedovski at UFC on ESPN+ 18. John would save his UFC career by knocking Alen out in 14 seconds with a vicious overhand left.
John had barely avoided being cut from the UFC but his KO over Alen managed to keep him under contract with the US based promotion. In his next fight he would welcome undefeated Swedish MMA prospect Khamzat Chimaev to the octagon in the featured prelim of UFC Fight Night: Kattar VS Ige. Chimaev would shoot almost as soon as the bout began, taking John down and landing a barage of punches. John would make it out of the first round only to be taken back down in the second round and eventually succumb to a D'Arce choke about a minute into the second round. John managed to land two strikes through out the 6 minute afair, of which only one was deemed as a significant strike. Chimaev landed 124 strikes on John breaking the record for highest strike differential in UFC history.
Despite being completely dominated in his last bout, John was given another fight, this time against a fellow striker in Jun Yong Park at UFC Fight Night: Ortega VS Korean Zombie. What on paper looked like a better matchup for John, quickly turned into a nightmare as Park would waste no time in taking John down where he would dominate Phillips for three straight rounds. Landing a total of 260 strikes against Phillips 13 in another record breaking fight. John would make it to a unanimous decision loss.
After losing 5 out of his 6 UFC bouts, John Phillips would be released from the promotion on the 13th of November 2020. John might not have had a great run in the UFC but after two back to back record breaking losses, John will forever be remembered by MMA fans.
