Takahashi vs. Shimizu Wiki Update Wiki
Wataru Takahashi and Shunichi Shimizu collided in the second fight of Sengoku 15 in a quarter-final round tournament bout for the promotion's Asian Bantamweight Grand Prix.
The bout began with both fighters exchanges strikes on the feet until Shimizu ended up in top position on the ground. Shimizu showed his aggressiveness by standing and launching a pair of footstomps that nearly connected with Takahashi's head. Takahashi looked to secure a leglock and had Shimizu on the defensive until he was able to scramble to Takahashi's back and threaten with an armbar. Takahashi defended well and managed to stand up and out of the hold, but it was Shimizu who likely won the round.
Takahashi began the second round throwing low kicks until Shimizu countered with a takedown attempt that plunged Takahashi out of the ropes and into a restart standing. Shimizu's next takedown attempt was more successful and he quickly had Takahashi's back looking for a rear naked choke. Takahashi had some chances in the last two minutes to inflict some damage and momentarily was in dominant position on the ground, but Shimizu's superior grappling enabled him to escape danger and likely win the round.
All three judge's scored the fight for the impressive grappler Shunichi Shimizu, who moved on to the semi-finals of the tournament.
