Wiki
Strikeforce Wiki
In the second Strikeforce event to be aired on CBS, the promotion put on one of the most dubiously planned fight cards in MMA history, scheduling three title fights of five rounds apiece for a two-hour block. All three went the distance. Muhammed Lawal took the Light Heavyweight Championship from Gegard Mousasi, Gilbert Melendez defended his Lightweight Championship against Shinya Aoki, and Jake Shields defended his Middleweight Championship against former Pride Champion Dan Henderson. None of the contests was overly exciting, with the Heavyweight and Middleweight bouts turning into wars of attrition on the ground. On that basis alone the event was a disappointment for the Strikeforce and CBS brass.
Following the main event between Shields and Henderson, matters only grew worse. One of Shields’s past opponents, Jason Miller, entered the cage to challenge the new champion, resulting in a brawl between Miller, Shields, and various members of Shields’s camp (including, not surprisingly, the Diaz brothers). The brawl aired on national television. It was an ignominious end to an ignominious night of fights.
Following the win over Henderson, Shields opted not to re-sign with the promotion, signing instead with the UFC and vacating his Strikeforce Middleweight belt.
