Izawa vs. Yamamoto
Seika Izawa, SUB, R1
I get this is probably a legacy fight but it doesn’t change the fact this is a gross mismatch. 50 year old woman with a losing record vs elite atomweight grappler, surely this will end well

Tanabe vs. Anzai
Igor Tanabe, SUB, R1
Love this fight for tanabe. He has elite bjj and has looked very good thus far. This is a perfect step up for him because it’s an ex ufc vet, but not someone who is going to destroy him. Anzai is a wrestler so he will willingly engage in grappling with Igor. My one problem with Igor is he will play off his back to get heel hooks and triangles. While it looks cool when he gets a sub, it’s dangerous because he can lose minutes fishing for a sub. Either way he should cruise here

Prediction Comments

Predictions: 8 of 16 Winners, 2 Perfect, 560 Points   |   Tied for 114th

Archuleta vs. Asakura
Juan Archuleta, DEC
Archuleta too consistent. I thought he was starting to get washed with his losses to stots and pettis but he has only looked better since then. He has to be careful because Kai has insane power but I think he will be fine

Horiguchi vs. Shinryu
Kyoji Horiguchi, TKO, R2
Kinda wish they weren’t rebooking this but should be a good fight regardless. I really like Shinryu but I think this is too big of a step up. He has looked great but is still losing rounds to subpar fighters. Kyoji has always been very high level but at 125 he is an elite fighter. We might see a stoppage here even

Koike Erbst vs. Saito
Kleber Koike Erbst, SUB, R2
I had always rated kleber highly but he has looked terrible recently. Losing to pitbull is whatever but I really hated how he basically just quit due to leg kicks. He subbed Suzuki with ease which was nice but then got dominated by a can in his last fight. This guy he’s fighting has never been subbed but kleber should win. Might be time to retire if he can’t get it done

Ougikubo vs. Dodson
John Dodson, DEC
Dodson’s longevity is insane. He has never been knocked down let alone ko’ed and is still chugging despite being an og in this game. Him in rizin is an absolute menace, especially with soccer kicks. Ogikubo is a great veteran but time is starting to catch up with him. I think Dodson could lowkey get a finish here

Ota vs. Ashizawa
Shinobu Ota, SUB, R1
Finally an easy fight for ota. I’ve really wanted him to succeed but rizin keeps violating with matchmaking, giving him 50+ fight vets like shoko sato despite having less than 10 fights. This other guy seems like a good kickboxer but that does it mean he will be good at mma

Sudario vs. Ueda
Tsuyoshi Sudario, TKO, R1
I saw sudario met with Dana before this fight to “discuss the future”. I wonder if he gets signed with a win. Hes not amazing but also not bad, would add good depth to the UFC

I don't know if I think Archuleta has looked better in RIZIN, I thought he lost to Soo Chul Kim (Wasn't a robbery and Kim is very underrated) and he didn't look amazing in the Inoue fight. Looked fine enough against Hiro though I suppose even though he is much bigger than him

Prediction Comments

Predictions: 8 of 16 Winners, 1 Perfect, 525 Points   |   Tied for 178th

Archuleta vs. Asakura
Juan Archuleta, SUB, R3
Kai has been losing New Year's Eve matches all year. This year will be no different. As an all-rounder, Archuleta is very good at controlling the match and I think he will continue to control Kai with his grappling and ground game.

Horiguchi vs. Shinryu
Makoto Shinryu, TKO, R3
Young shinryu must win for the future of Japanese MMA. I am predicting shinryu with some hope.

Koike Erbst vs. Saito
Kleber Koike Erbst, SUB, R3
Originally, Saito would have had a chance to win, but Kleber played a match with Kanehara, a similar type of player, and suffered a defeat. I think he has taken advantage of the loss against Kanehara and has taken countermeasures against Saito, who is a similar type of fighter to Kanehara.

Ougikubo vs. Dodson
John Dodson, DEC
A world-class flyweight bout. Ogikubo is a good fighter, but Dodson has very tricky striking and hitting ability. Both fighters are very strong against blows and will likely go to decision. I expect Dodson to win by split decision, though. Either one of them could win.

Ota vs. Ashizawa
Shinobu Ota, SUB, R1
Quite frankly, I don't know why they set up such a match. Ota is a silver medalist in Greco-Roman. Ashizawa, on the other hand, is a kick boxer with a very light back.

Sudario vs. Ueda
Tsuyoshi Sudario, TKO, R2
The strongest match of the heavyweight division in Japan. I think Sudario will win due to his experience, but Ueda is also a Kyokushin Karate heavyweight world champion and has a very powerful blow.

Miura vs. Tanaka
Koji Tanaka, SUB, R2
He's got where he has on his father's coattails.

Tanabe vs. Anzai
Igor Tanabe, SUB, R2
Igor, who has been competing in the middleweight division, will be competing in the welterweight division for the first time.

Hiramoto vs. Sugiyama
Ren Sugiyama, TKO, R2
It seems to me that YAMAN(Sugiyama) in good shape will KO Hiramoto.

Sakura vs. Hiramoto
Yushi Sakura, DEC
The only highlight for Yushi is his entrance, but he has more MMA experience and will have no chance against Jo, who is almost an amateur.

Motoya vs. Morales
Yuki Motoya, TKO, R2
Motoya is becoming one of the top-ranked Japanese bantamweights as a member of the American Top Team. His opponent Morales, on the other hand, was a mid-tier fighter in the UFC. The outcome of this matchup will prove the current level of Japanese MMA.

Arai vs. Kondo
Jo Arai, DEC
Arai is a two-time Shooto champion and a promising young prospect in Japanese MMA, and will be Hiroya's toughest opponent yet.

Archuleta vs. Asakura
Kai Asakura, TKO, R3
Archuelta has looked solid in Rizin, hasn't been too exciting but he's got it done. Asakura isn't as bad at defending takedowns as it may seem, the Ougikubo fight should have an asterisk, it was tournament format from what I remember. He's fully prepped now and I can see a close decision or even late finish for Asakura.

Horiguchi vs. Shinryu
Kyoji Horiguchi, DEC
What a let down the first booking was, quite literally ruined the flyweight division happening in Bellator. Now a three rounder, so I feel that Kyoji will outstrike Makoto comfortably to a decision. Makoto may catch a back so be aware

Ougikubo vs. Dodson
John Dodson, DEC
Best matchup that can be made for Dodson in Rizin. Ougikubo is a dog

Motoya vs. Morales
Yuki Motoya, DEC
Penafiel is a decent win, but Motoya has been holding it down for a while, great matchmaking

Arai vs. Kondo
Jo Arai, DEC
Kondo is pretty solid, it's hard to have a great record as a young fighter in Asia when they feed you killers or more experienced guys so early.

This kid is too explosive to not eventually start laying opponents out and his striking is not half bad. Horiguchi may very well be the unlucky recipient of that first knockout win for Shinryu.

Izawa vs. Yamamoto
Seika Izawa, SUB, R1
Seika is a P4P talent I hope she doesn't fight her entire career in Japan.

Arai vs. Kondo
Jo Arai, TKO, R3
Every fight is a war and all wins are hard fought because Jo is undersized, even for flyweight, and usually is at a significant deficit in athleticism. but he does have a good chin and mental toughness in spades. Should be a great fight!

Horiguchi vs. Shinryu is such a sick fight. As long as there's no shenanigans this time, it has FOTY potential. I am rarely this excited for fights these days. This will either be a true passing of the torch moment, or a still-elite veteran proving he can still hang with young, dangerous fighters. It's great.
