I went back all the way to the 20th page and didn't see anyone who started a thread about movies. If there is one, just let this thread sink away into the abyss of thread history, but if not, this is something we can talk about. We've got one for every sport, music, and TV shows. So I figured might as well.

January usually isn't great for movies. Saw "The Boy" and it turned out much better than expected.  Sets up good tension and a creepy mood. Though it has a few it doesn't rely on jump scares or overuse them. I enjoyed it, the ending will be divisive though.

The 5th Wave. Alien invades the earth and try to systematically wipe us out our only hope an army of children.  Another sci-fi teen movie. Terribly paced it drags everywhere,  the actings is rough, and it has huge plot holes throughout.

All of the big moneymakers are planned from thanksgiving to xmas and Memorial day to July 4th. Sometimes mid March is used as with the first Hunger Games was but only sometimes due to no competition.

Watched Kung Fu Panda 3 the other day. It was a fun movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the first movie but have really enjoyed both sequels more than the original. Po has had a great progression through the series and the animation is really stylized to be reminiscent of the old Kung Fu movies.

Watched World War III, an early 80s TV movie. Interesting Cold War movie. It had Rock Hudson in it a few years before he died.

Went to see "Hail, Caesar!" yesterday it's a satirical omage to the golden of Hollywood about a fixer played by Josh Brolin who's job is to keep scandals out of the press and protect studio image. I like the Coen brothers and enjoyed this film though it wasn't their best and loses some momentum towards the end.

Before that saw "Jane Got a Gun" overall it's a pretty dull film with a whole lot of nothing until the final climactic showdown.  Probably shouldn't be called "Jane Got a Gun" should be called "Jane runs to her ex for help when her husband gets shot and lay dying" though that would be hard to fit on a poster.

I don't think we are in-store for many more Taratino or Coen gems at this point.

I always thought the Coens were overrated except Raising Arizona and Fargo.

I really like the Coen Brothers work in general however they often have stuff in their movies so subtle you don't pick it up on first viewing.  "No Country for Old Men," "Fargo," "The Big Lebowski," "O'Brother Where Art Thou," "Millers Crossing," "Barton Fink," "Raising Arizona," "Inside Lewin Davis" even "Hail, Caesar!" I liked. they aren't always going to be homeruns but still enjoyable.

They always seem to be somewhere between hipster and populists.
If they think they are, like Kubrick, they are wrong.

I don't think they are trying to be Kubrick. Their styles are quite different. Between Coen's and Kubrick if you asked me which made more films I enjoy it would be the Coens. I own like four Kubrick films and nine Coen Brothers films. My favorite Kubrick film is Dr. Strangelove my Favorite of the Coens would be between Big Lebowski,  No Country for Old Men, and Fargo

On the en, it is all opinion. However, I have noticed many hidden things in Kubricks films that I can see who his genius and photography expertise shine. Even Eyes Wide Shut had plenty hidden in it.

Saw "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" not bad though it was a little too much Pride and Prejudice and not enough Zombies. Like the zombie mythology in this film as well.

Also watched "Boy & the World" last film of the Oscar best animated feature nominees I had see. Simple and colorful though it isb totally artsy with an underlying political and economic message. There is no real dialogue and the story is entirely told through visuals and music.

Went to see "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Bengazi" Typical Michael Bay affair. Lots of Guns, lots of explosions, lots of shirtless men working out in the desert. There are a lot of standard tropes used in the movie and it's way longer than it meeds to be. However if you are into the big shoot 'em up war movies you may walk away entertained.

I hated "Olympus Has Fallen" the overall premise and plot were just so unbelievably stupid. I would be shocked if "London has Fallen" is anything but mindless.

It was worse than I expected. That Isn't exactly an excuse to be bad either. I expected the film to be at least entertaining but for me guns firing bullets and things exploding doesn't matter if I don't care about the story or the characters especially if the tone of the film doesn't fit what is happening on screen. Also the way "Olympus has fallen" is presented like it is trying to be a legit thriller. It's like the difference between "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" both movies are stupid but one knows it's stupid and the other likes to pretend it's a legit action drama. Same with "White House Down" and "Olympus has Fallen" they are both stupid but only one of them seems to know it was stupid.

Mindless in what way?  Tell me an action movie that has that many deaths that is believable.  Commando is one of my favs yet it is not realistic at all yet it works.

See I like Commando and Commando is another movie where the tone is that it knows it is being stupid and just trying to be fun. It's all about tone and Olympus has fallen set a tone where I couldn't enjoy it.  It was not fun enough to be a Commando type action and it's plot was too weak and had too many holes to be a plot driven thriller.  I just remember watching Olympus Has Fallen and hating the whole experience.

Well, that is why people can have different opinions.  A lot of people like Pulp Fiction and think it is decent at best.
