Then all of a sudden I recalled Jiri being upset he was being constantly bothered by USADA. Supposedly he was getting tested like 1-2 times per week. That's quite excessive. Why?
I'd never be able to prove any kind of conspiracy of course, but Dana White immediately provided a Trump-esque description of Jiri's injury the moment the news broke.
"He absolutely shredded his shoulder. Its really bad, the worst the Doctors have ever seen!"
Jiri is a true martial artist and I guess I can't get discount the fact that honor and standing means a lot to him. He genuinely strikes me as the kind of character who would give up his belt to "not hold up the division".
However, if Jiri was juicing and stopped because he was getting tested so much, that could explain the severity of his injury. If you continue to do the same kind of intense training without the "secret stuff" that was contributing to your ability to train at that level, you absolutely increase your chance of injury.
To illustrate my point, lets play devils advocate and assume Jiri was juicing. Before steroids, lets say Jiri couldn't lift a 100lb weight. After juicing, he lifts it no problem. Suddenly he is required to stop cold turkey. At this point, he's built up the mass. He can lift the weight. But those steroids are like putting gas into a car. The car will move (the weight is lifted) as long as theirs some gas in the tank. Eventually, because Jiri was getting tested so consistently, he had to hit empty. But he continued to take trips (lift weights/train) like there was still gas in the tank. A car obviously halts mid trip if its completely empty, and that's exactly what Jiri's shoulder may have done as he continued to train.
I'm a big believer in identifying false patterns. Jiri is a big strong athlete who could have just blown out his shoulder training.I could very easily be looking to deep into a narrative that's not there. But Jiri vacating immediately post injury while Ngannou gets to sit on the shelf for a year+ holding his belt doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever.
Would be interested to hear some other thoughts on this from the Tap community.

If he gets into a scramble with Glover, it'll probably go poorly. But maybe he can defend well enough to keep it standing.
