Gracie vs. Shamrock I Wiki Update Wiki

The first meeting between fellow MMA pioneers Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie was a fast and explosive affair that proved what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was capable of, as Gracie finished Shamrock at the beginning of the first round.

Gracie had impressed many with his submission of Art Jimmerson in the opening round of the UFC 1 tournament. But many felt that the size and strength disadvantage against Shamrock would be too great for him to overcome. For his part, Shamrock may have been a pro wrestling star, but he was also a skilled shootfighter well-versed in leglocks, which made him a bad match-up (on paper) for Gracie.

Gracie entered the cage first, Shamrock following with a towel over his head, looking confident.

Gracie surprised everyone in attendance by diving straight for Shamrock's legs to start the fight. Although Shamrock defended the takedown, Gracie reversed him quickly, slapped on a modified Gi choke, and forced the American to tap out at the 0:57 mark.

The quick fight between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock was not only one of the earliest public displays of the power of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to a mass audience, but also served as a historic meeting between two of the most important and recognized faces in the history of mixed martial arts.
