I'll post what's happening as it comes through for purposes of posterity. Doubt the veracity of what is posted here. Having lived through the Iraq war, I am sure that the vast majority of what gets reported will turn out to be either misinformation or outright ********. Posting because a lot of non-Australia members will be asleep, now. I'll report as much as I can.

So far the g****vine is:

Russia has indeed embarked on a full scale invasion of Ukraine. Air attacks, and ground forces. There has been at least one missile strike, there have been front-line Ukranian casualities ( have seen video, cannot post it here, too graphic).

Belarus has thrown in with Russia/is issuing support.
Reports of Ukrainian air defence having shot down multiple Russian planes, either drones or fighters.

I didn't realize Finns didn't see themselves as Western. Being non-aligned seems to have worked out pretty well for y'all. In a world with wiser leaders the Ukraine situation could probably be solved by having Ukraine by non-aligned military and economically integrated with both Russia and the West. "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations—entangling alliances with none."

gwinCLARKE2019 I agree, Zelensky has seemed to me that he's being just juked by the US and he has personal feeling against Putin himself. He's making bad decisions for his people for the sake of him looking good for the public.

American mercenaries operating in Ukraine say that Ukrainian resistance is disorganised, ineffective. Also says Ukrainian troops looted the bodies of fallen Americans (their comrades) and took money, personal possessions and equipment etc.

Honestly, I think it's more a case of Russia trying not to level everything. They could do it but Ukraine has a lot of assets and historical sites that are as important to Russia as they are to Ukraine. They're in it for the long term too, they know that mass slaughter and destruction can't be recovered from.

Winter is coming to Europe, soon. I have a strong feeling that sanctions against Russian energy will prertty much end at that point, not that they've achieved anything anyway apart from hurting ordinary people in NATO countries. It's a very unpopular war.

Weaponry. German DM22 'off-route mine' destroys Russian truck

Mines are pretty nasty stuff. Just look at the timeline of Ryan 'tip of the spear' Hendrickson who is currently mine hunting in Ukraine pulling hundreds of those things out of the fields - once that war is over the population will be burdened with that junk for decades. An exception because of what is horrific: the German PARM 2 DM-22 'off-route' mine. It looks brutal and acts brutal: you stretch a wire over the road, aim that mine at the spot where the tank or truck will drive and *pop*. Germany has reportedly given 1,600 of those devices to Ukraine. And, see video above: they perfectly work! Germany, guilty!
