Khamzat Chimaev, TKO, R2
I'm not convinced by the matchmaking, but Nate already wants to finish his contract and since he only has one fight left on the contract, obviously Dana White was going to put him against Conor McGregor to close the trilogy or against Chimaev. It's a win-win situation for everyone: Nate gets Freedom from him, Khamzat gets an easy fight and Dana White gets to test how good Chimaev can be at PPV sales. There is not much to analyze about the pick: Chimaev is a big welterwight while Diaz was always more in the line of 155-165 pounds, I imagine the same scenario of Masvidal vs. Diaz: Diaz being hurt in the first rounds of the fight, staying in Zombie Mood, but with the difference that Chimaev if he managed to stop him by a means other than Doctor Stoppage. I still can't understand how winning a competitive fight against Gilbert Burns (#2 ranked at the time) disqualifies him as a title contender and the next big thing, but finishing Nate Diaz (who is unranked and whose last win It was before the pandemic) makes him a candidate to be the first champion in three categories of the UFC and potential GOAT. You can't argue too much about the logic of the casual crowd, but Dana White getting so stubborn about this matchup is what leads to all this fighter malaise regarding rankings, spotlight, payouts, and level of exposure.
