I went back all the way to the 20th page and didn't see anyone who started a thread about movies. If there is one, just let this thread sink away into the abyss of thread history, but if not, this is something we can talk about. We've got one for every sport, music, and TV shows. So I figured might as well.

@skelliher While I have only seen one of the two films; I think Black Mass might be the better of the two, because Black Mass looks to be grittier and more realistic to the actual setting, while The Departed wasn't.  There were definitely some dark parts to The Departed and I absolutely thought Scorsese did a good job with this film; but the actor choices felt a bit hit or miss in comparison to other mafia films he did like Goodfellas and Casino. I felt the use of actors like Nicholson and Damon to represent characters based on Whitey Bulger and Detective Connolly respectfully were not as good as what they could have been; as I felt I wasn't seeing a proper representation of Bulger and Connolly.  More or less, I felt Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon played these roles in name alone.  I also felt Alec Baldwin's performance was very average and sometimes too over the top.  Mark Wahlberg actually had done a very good job with his character, and I also liked DiCaprio and Sheen's performances (despite their forced Bostonian accents).  But overall, I felt somewhat underwhelmed by the film.

Now, I do believe it's fair to be skeptical of Depp as Bulger due to his spotty record with roles as of recently; with more people associating him with his performances with Tim Burton.  However, I feel that his characterization of Bulger looks ten times better than Nicholson's.  Plus, I think the depiction of how South Boston was back in the 1980's looks ten times better than the one in the Departed.  Granted all I have seen is what has been shown in the trailers, but what I have seen looks pretty solid (to me at least) and I'm willing to give this movie a chance.

Nicholson was loosely based on Bulger ... he wasn't literally supposed to be him. I haven't seen Black Mass, so I can't make a real comparison, but I have a hard time believing it comes close to The Departed.

I just saw Sicario the other day and it was excellent.  Loved everthing about it. Emily Blunt plays an FBI agent who after discovering a house full of dead bodies is recruited to a special task force trying to bring down the Juarez drug cartel. She is kept in the dark by Josh Brolin who says he's part of the DOJ. She also has no idea who Alejandro played by Benicia Del Toro works for and what his purpose is. It's an excellent thriller with a little bit of an uncoventional style, great cinematography and acting.

Saw The Martian last night. Found it to be just OK typical survival movie like "Castaway," "Apollo 13," "All is Lost," "Gravity" etc. The characters lack development or depth. There was no emotional impact to the film for me. Matt Damon is very flippant about his situation and never seems to deliver more than the occasional funny quip. The film is so much exposition just explain what we are going to do, then do it, success yeah, fail Noooo, repeat.  It's also very predictable.

Martian was predictable but most movies are. It was one big marketing ploy. Look how well the Chinese were made to look so the film would sell there for example.

Most movies are predictable in the broadest sense of the word. You know generally in movies the good guys will win though there are a lot of movies where this is not the case. But we don't know how and there are elements of doubt along the way. Sometimes some characters have to sacrifice themselves or other things happen we don't see coming. In the Martian ever single beat is predictable there was never a moment where I was like Wow I didn't expect that to happen. Even the biggest most formulaic Marvel films have moments where I didn't know exactly what was going to happen next. So when I say a movie is predictable I don't mean just the general outcome I mean every step along the entire duration you see coming.
