Edwards vs. Bäckström Wiki Update Wiki

The fifth bout of Cage Warriors 41 saw Adam Edwards take on Niklas Backstrom in a featherweight contest.

Backstrom wasted no time in looking to bring the fight to the mat but was stuffed by Edwards. Backstrom succeeded on his second attempt and into Edwards's guard. Backstrom almost found himself in a guillotine choke as he looked to pass guard but continued to work hard on the ground to improve position. Edwards was active off of his back and looked for submissions but it was Backstrom who maintained the best positioning. Back standing and it was only a moment later before Edwards easily gave up another takedown and again had to work off of his back. Edwards tried to control Backstrom's shoulder and lock up a kimura, eating some elbows for his efforts at the end of the round. A small cut opened on the top of Edwards's head.

Edwards came out for round two with a quickly growing hematoma on the left side of his forehead. Edwards landed a nice combination, stuffed a takedown attempt from Backstrom, but again found himself on his back. Edwards didn't stop attacking, worked for a moment for a toe-hold, but the superior wrestling of Backstrom again made the difference in the transitions. Backstrom nicely passed to side control, then full mount, but Edwards easily shrimped and regained guard. The referee stood the fighters despite the fast action on the ground with 45 seconds remaining. Edwards tripped Backstrom to the ground and rode out the position for the remaining seconds.

Edwards clinched and looked for a trip takedown yet couldn't catch Backstrom and was dumped onto his back. Backstrom landed some nice ground and pound and secured the full mount position. Edwards escaped when Backstrom looked for an armbar, though Backstrom needed only a second to get top position again. Edwards nicely swept his way out of full mount despite looking to be low on gas. Edwards attacked for a heel hook in perhaps his last possibility for a finish, Backstrom escaped and the final horn sounded.

The judges scored the bout 30-27, 30-27, and 30-28 in favor of Niklas Backstrom.
