It's a great book hippie, one of my favorites.
If you've never read this, you absolutely need to. It's kind of like the inverse of Siddartha.

@hippie you can check the documentary out first see if it interests you. The book basically goes into more detail than they could fit

I have been curious about Grendel for some time now. What is the intention of re-framing the story in this way? Is it a justification for Grendel? Is it making the case that evil and good are matters of perspective?

@Buffalo it's simply a re-telling of Beowulf from the monster Grendel's perspective. It's kind of a masterwork really...Gardner was a very accomplished philosopher and as you'd expect some of the ideas are very arcane but it's written in in a very accessible conversational style, like a fairy tale.
Be warned though; once you read what the Dragon has to say about existence it will stay with you forever lol.
