Ariel Helwani ‏@arielhelwani

Dana just said Aldo told him he is refusing up flight Pettis because he doesn't think he deserves it.

Ariel Helwani ‏@arielhelwani

Dana said Aldo will fight Pettis or he's not going to like the way this turns out. He's absolutely refusing right now.

He knows Pettis would beat him on the feet, he doesn't want to get embarrassed.

Aldo: Pettis doesn't deserve it. (He's coming off impressive wins at Lightweight and doesn't deserve it, yet Aldo fought Edgar who had lost 2 in a row at Lightweight ... makes sense.)

GSP: I don't want to fight a guy that lost to a guy that I beat. (Insinuating Josh Koscheck should have beat Johny Hendricks .. when even then ... he asked to fight Diaz whom ACTUALLY lost to a guy in which GSP just beat...)

These champion and their excuses out of hard fights lately.

Its really starting to piss me off. The champion should not be allowed to do this. It should be if you refuse to fight then you get your belt taken away.

I am confused as to how this actually works.

White keeps insisting that they have to fight who they're told to fight.

Yet, many guys refuse fights all the time.  Do champions have the right to refuse fights in their own division?

What kind of leverage does the UFC have by contract?  Can they black-ball people who refuse to play ball?

I wonder what the consequences would be. Champions don't choose who they fight. The UFC does in the end. I wonder why Aldo would be fine with it at first and then now he's not all of a sudden?

Doubt this is true. Have a feeling misinterpretation is what happened. Aldo may have said he didn't want to fight Pettis at 145. Considering there was already talk of Aldo moving up, that seems plausible. Another possibility is he may have asked about fighting Lamas, considering Lamas has undoubtedly earned a shot at the title now. Aldo, as far as I know, has been incredibly classy from his WEC days to now, and Dana is a perpetual liar so I would like to hear what Jose has to say before jumping to conclusions.

Another thing to consider, he may just be maneuvering for more money, considering his last performance gained him less than Rashad Evans or Overeem's show pay was. When a champ is making less than what those 2 did for the garbage that they called fighting, I can see why you would maneuver for more moolah.

Honestly, I don't even understand why Pettis is getting this shot in the first place. He has a guaranteed title shot at 155. Why cut down to a weight you've never been to when the titleshot is guaranteed at your current weight class against a guy you've already beat before?

I would have understood Aldo if he said he'd rather defend it against Lamas but waiting this long to say something makes him look bad.

@Kallous Uh...Well, from my understanding this was in a private conversation for negotiations. So, maybe, he didn't want to publicize and hurt the UFC's business? Truth is, this is the first time I've heard of him commenting on the fight period. And based on an article I read, it wasn't actually Aldo that said it. It was his manager. Manager's are supposed to say & do everything they can to increase the amount of money Aldo is to be paid. Like I said, this seems like a ploy for mo' money.

So because GSP asked for one fight against a guy who many on this site believed would beat GSP now all of a sudden he chooses who he fights? Face palm all you want but it's not the case. Just because someone asks for a fight that doesn't mean they will get it. Maybe Dana granted GSP with his request because in 8 years GSP has never given the UFC an ounce of trouble, always fought whoever they asked, made the UFC more money then any other fighter, been one of the most dominant champions ever and is the face of the sport of mma and it's top organization.

Look at the list of fighters GSP has fought and tell me again he's avoiding Johny ******* Hendricks. After all the **** Diaz has said about GSP this fight had to happen. Keep in mind too GSP asked for the fight and Dana said yes. Dana could have said no and that would have been the end of it.
