First of all: Hello to everyone, I'm pretty new to this site and enjoying it so far :D so please go easy on me ;)
It appears that Matt Hughes has retired and I'm just wondering how people feel about it. I think it's about time, I'm a huge Hughes fan and while sad to see him go I'm happy I won't have to worry about seeing him get knocked out again. With a record of 45-9-0 (pretty impressive) and wins over every UFC welterweight champion besides Pat Militech (and Carlos Condit if you include the interim title) Matt pretty much has nothing left to prove in MMA. I'll always remember Hughes as the beast who slammed people to the mat and delivered brutal ground and pound, as opposed to his later K-1 performances :P Hughes-Trigg 2 is still my favourite comeback of all time from the knee to the nuts to Matt carrying Trigg across the cage I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Certainly a legend and perhaps the greatest welterweight of all time ( just an opinion people!! GSP is certainly worthy of the mantle aswell). Just glad his losses never reached the double digits :P anyway let me know how you feel about Matt retiring wether you were a fan or not everyone is entitled to an opinion. Peace out hombres :D

Matt Hughes is an ******* of a person, evidence being his stints as coach on The Ultimate Fighter, twice.

But once I watch one of his vintage matches, and I see him slam his opponents the way he does, it rekindles my love for him. Hughes/Trigg II is my favorite comeback as well, what an amazing moment. Matt Hughes is a beast of a human being, he'll be missed.

While I agree with Anik that his stints on TUF made him look like a bit of an ass, from actually meeting him several times he was nice and a cool dude. I will always have respect for Hughes, without him I wouldnt have found MMA until at least a few years after I did

Thanks AnikM, whilst I agree Matt may not be the nicest person, I'm thankful I watched his fights before seeing him on the Ultimate Fighter or I may well not be as big a fan as I am!! Thankfully as  you said he is a beast when he fights :D

I think Matt Hughes/GSP 1 was the first fight I ever watched, either that or Anderson/Griffin.

Hey Pat welcome to the site. I'm not a Hughs fan at all but he had some epic moments in his career and he isn't a UFC hall of famer for nothing.

I would have been down for a last fight between him and Matt Serra but I guess I can live without it. Hope he doesn't go crazy on the hunting, now he has all that time.

@AnikM well that is a huge achievement on its own a win over GSP, as for Anderson/Forrest that would be a crazy introduction to the sport!! :D
@dielegende23 thanks for the welcome :D yeah I thought the first Serra fight was really close, as for hunting apparently he's either got or is getting his own hunting show :O

nice post man. welcome to tapology. as for Hughes, he's a legend and there's no debating that. i'm glad he has a spot in the HOF. he'll go down as one of the greatest welterweights of all time. i got to meet him at ufc 137, but it was too quick for me to  make a judgement on him. one of my friends, however, has done some seminars with him and says he is a very nice guy

Oh wow, his own hunting show. I didn't have a clue. Well I just hope they are gonna kill animals one could and should eat, rather than feral cats and such.

I never really liked him, but you can't deny him his place in MMA history. Despite not being a fan, the second Trigg fight is still one that i love to watch to this day. That one is a classic.

@PatGallagher That was a very good showing for GSP though, I still remember that BEAUTIFUL spinning back kick that he landed on Hughes. Wow. GSP just made a really dumb mistake when he went for the kimura, and Matt Hughes who apparently has the same belt as I do in jiu-jitsu, went for the counter and got it with ease. Great fight for the both of them.

When I think of Matt Hughes, I first think of this summary of his autobiography, which I admit is exaggerated by the reviewer.

tl;dr version: Matt Hughes can be quite a sociopath at times.

Here's one forum thread that has the summary going around:

Its been a long time since I read the book and yes there was some ****** up things in there (though a lot of it just depends on how you were raised), but a lot of that I dont remember and seems exaggerated to me

If he just cut off the testicles of a pig and thought it was funny, then that's extremely ****** up. I don't like Hughes, but i feel like some of that explained in that review may be exaggerated.

The fight that got me in to mma was Hughes/Penn 1. I was hooked after that and Hughes was a big part of that for me. Matt Hughes is a legend and a UFC HOFer who probably hung on a couple fights too long. If he hadn't his record might have looked a little better. Regardless in 25 years when people look back on mma specifically the ww division Matt Hughes' name will be one of the first mentioned and his impact on how people fight will still be felt.

To the people that havent read the book and are just going off of that summary should really just read the book. That "summary" was your typical hater taking things out of context and reading what he wanted to read. I will admit there were a few points I was wondering *** but it was nowhere near that bad.

@Prodigy, the whole cutting off the pig's testicles was just castration. The Hughes brothers did throw them at Fiore because "he was a city boy trying to be a farmboy". They just wanted to freak him out.
