My MMA Rankings
Top Heavyweight MMA Fighters
The allure of heavyweight fighting makes this the most prestigous division in mixed martial arts. This prestige also hides the fact that HW is constantly on shaky ground. While a few well rounded marital artists stand at the top, there are far more fighters getting by on their genetic blessings of size and power. HWs that cannot break into the top 5 make up for this by way of gimicks. Roy Nelson is the fat guy. Antonio Silva is a biological anomaly. Stevan Struve is incredibly tall, and the list goes on. As the UFC consolidates top talent in this divsion, more HW prospects will find themselves facing tough competition before they are ready. The future is brighter though. The past few years have seen the return of smaller, but more athletic HWs. This culminated with Lesnar v Velasquez and the trend continues. As 235 becomes the new norm for the divsion instead of 265, the quality of fights and fighters wil increase.
