Announcement

Big news. Big signing by Bellator. And sets up a potential Bendo-Brooks title fight this year, assuming he goes back down to 155.

Personally, I think it was a smart move by Bendo. Bellator has some studs, but nothing like the UFC right now. He can be a big fish in a small pond. He actually could have a chance at being a two-division champ on Spike.

Will be interesting to see if other current UFC free agents - Overeem, Sterling - sign there as well.

I'm sure its a much more appealing option now with this whole Reebok fiasco going on.

Interesting tidbits I've picked up from Botter's Twitter account: Bellator has been inserting "poison pills" into contact offers to free agents. Basically, these are stipulations that offer no risk to Bellator but make the UFC refrain from matching because of the precedent they would set.

Example: Bellator could offer Bendo 20% of revenue from all live gates that do over $4M. Bellator does not do gates that high, so it's no risk for them to place it in a contract; the UFC does do gates that high.

Aljo has the same manager as Bendo. I expect him to sign with Bellator, but I expect the UFC to throw the bank at Overeem. Mitrione is tough to know.

They coulda done that with PPV too

give him x amount of money for every PPV even if he's not on the card. Bellator rarely does PPVs

I think the perfect career as an MMA fighter is to fight in the UFC, win the belt, defend it enough times until you're a household name. Lose the belt, then get big paychecks fighting lower level fighters in Bellator.

Seems unwise of UFC to let a fighter like Benson go although it's hard to say what Bellator offered and UFC handicaps themselves with the stupid ******* Reebok deal. Honestly think welterweight is the easier division for him in Bellator, but lightweight has the better fights.

was he going down hill?  He beat a top 15 welter by finish and then follow that up by beating a top 10 light weight.

Downhill? His only losses were to Pettis and RDA, both lightweight champs.

Yeah I can't stand Henderson but him going downhill isn't really accurate at all. He will beat anyone in Bellator for sure.

This doesn't change the roster or the positioning of the UFC as No. 1 and Bellator as a distant No. 2 overnight, but it does represent a subtle sea change in terms of free agent contract negotiations. Many fighters are following Bendo's lead and fighting out their contracts.

Free agents: Alistair Overeem, Aljamain Sterling, Matt Mitrione

Potential soon-to-be Free agent: Dustin Poirier (has 1 fight left and wants to test the waters)

I didn't down thumb you, mine was directed towards rotojohn's post, your post clearly was questioning if he was going down hill in response to rotojohn as well.

@skelli I just noticed your tidbit about Poirier, did he say somewhere he wants to look elsewhere ?
