I went back all the way to the 20th page and didn't see anyone who started a thread about movies. If there is one, just let this thread sink away into the abyss of thread history, but if not, this is something we can talk about. We've got one for every sport, music, and TV shows. So I figured might as well.

I really like the Hobbit movies overall despite the CGI.  I feel it was obviously a mistake to use so much CGI as well as the high frame rate which posed a problem for the initial intended pratical effects.  Overuse of CGI has made a lot of directors lazy and there are little nuances that get left out. We'll fix it in post becomes a crutch.

@flying_frontkick I would agree with you that, that statement is true for 99% of the actors/actresses in Hollywood, but Sir Ian McKellen is in that 1%.

The dude is old school, study at a college within the University of Cambridge, started out in theatre, then even when he started in acting most of his films were based off of plays or books and even though some were artsy and didn't do well at the box office, nearly everyone was well received by critics.

One director I don't believe will ever give in and do a CGI heavy film is Wes Anderson. His films are amazing; he modeled the buildings in The Grand Budapest Hotel instead of making them CGI.

I wonder why Jackson decided to not use camera tricks and practical effects for this, to be honest that is what really made it awesome for the LOTR movies.

Guillermo Del Toro says the same thing. It's one of the reasons he's such a big fan of rubber suits in his movies. One of the biggest problems with CGI is how dated movies look after just a couple years. I recently watched Hellboy 1 & 2 (both done by Del Toro) and I can honestly say that the first movie is able to retain suspension of disbelief better than the sequel simply because there was significantly less CGI used. There are movies from just a few years ago that look really cartoonish now because the technology has gotten so much better. Reliance on CGI is terrible for retaining the look of the movie over time.

Yup, he was in Season 4.  They've used 3 different actors throughout the series.

Speaking of using practical effects, Christopher Nolan is really good about this. He used as much real terrain and props as possible for Interstellar.

Jackson has definitely pulled a bit of a Lucas with the Hobbit. But I don't think they're horrible. Just compared to LOTR.

Watched "The Homesman" yesterday. It's pretty depressing I was left feeling just empty, an overall fewling of nothingness or indifference, can't say I enjoyed it.
