Patrick Cummins steps up. Way up.

UFC ‏@ufc  2m

We have a fight!! @DC_MMA will face @OfficialDurkin at #UFC170!

Weird, since they were talking about postponing the Shad fight, I guess Cormier REALLY wanted to fight after all the hard work getting his weight down.

Dude's a light heavyweight with 4 professional fights vs. a bonafide 265 AND 205 contender ... seriously UFC, you're doing it wrong ...

And I thought the Chael Sonnen fight was a joke of a replacement.

This is a dangerous fight for DC, Cummins ain't no joke. If this wasn't on short notice i'd be tempted to take him, but DC should take this via late stoppage.

Oh well that's interesting. I'm sure I must have seen his SF fight but I don't remember. It would definitely hit the upsets of the year lists if he manages to beat DC.

Cummins doesn't have the Olympic status like Cormier, but he was close to it.

Cormier has nothing to gain from this fight. He would have been better off waiting for Rashad but I'm guessing he has his weight where it needs to be already and it would be too hard for him to do it again in a couple months.

02.13.2014 | 1:17 PM ET | ReplyReport

They should get a replacement. Daniel Cormier worked his ass off to cut the weight to fight at UFC 170.. now he has to wait 2 more months to reschedule the fight at UFC 172? Why? That isn't fair. ****, Patrick Cummins offered to fight him on 10 days notice.. why not let that happen. Cummins has serious potential and has wrestled DC before. Both guys have good wrestling, both guys have good (but different) striking. Why not?

The only good things that'll come out of this are that DC gets a solid test at 205 and doesn't waste all the hard work and that Cummins looks like a solid sign to a starving division win or lose to Cormier.

Heck, all he needs to do is put up a good effort and he'll "skyrocket" up the division's rankings.

I don´t know if that´s true, but to the manager I would say that MMA is not wrestling and DC is the guy who put the Warmaster on his head and beat him for 5 rounds

@mulefloyd, I'm smelling a Dana ******** buildup attempt here^

Even if it's true, we're talking about two different fighters in a completely different sport with a vast experience level difference and one of them's also after the craziest camp of his life (oh and sparring with the baddest man on the planet doesn't suck either).

Not saying it can't happen, stranger things have happened, but I wouldn't read too much into that ... other than it serving as a red light to all those who are planning on picking an automatic TKO1 on Tap, I don't think this is the fight he wins ...

People sleeping on Cummins, I think Cormier still wins but it should be competitive and I think Cummins would have a good shot if this wasn't last minute

"There's a lot of pressure that comes with trying to win a gold medal," Cormier told MMAFighting.com, "something that Pat wouldn't understand since he was only a training partner to me and Kerry McCoy. He wasn't the guy. I appreciate him stepping up and taking the fight, but we're going to see who's going to be crying after we fight next Saturday night."

Patrick Cummins was a collegiate All-American wrestler, but combined record of his 4 MMA opponents is 9-21. Last one, Willie Smalls is 5-15.

but tap has 2 of his opponents with 2-1 & 3-1 records and one we don't have so there's a discrepancy since 5 + 2 + 3 = 11 which > 9 :D

Sherdog has Tasi Edwards at 2-1 while the underground has him at 1-1.
