Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship®, released a statement today regarding UFC® light heavyweight Thiago Silva:
“Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again.”

Fighters are tested prior for steroids and drugs. The thing is, a fighter obviously couldn't fight high or drunk as it would be unsafe for them.
The thing about THC is it metabolizes and is stored in body fat. Urine tests only shows about 10 to 13 days use, not impairment or intoxication. Now a blood test (which fighters do take before the fight) can show if a fighter is intoxicated, but THC doesn't stay in the bloodstream very long. So in the sense of if it's safe or unsafe should be argued. No one should really give a **** if someone decides to smoke in their house weeks prior to a fight... but if someone shows up high than it could be debated as unsafe.
Regardless, if it's considered illegal and can change the outcome of your fight, don't be a ******* dumb**** and just don't smoke.

Fighters can even show up to a fight hungover from the night before and no punishment whatsoever, but if you smoke some weed a couple weeks before a fight you're ******.
Rules are rules though, too bad they're severely flawed when it comes to this, in my opinion.

I completely agree.... but it's not like these don't know they are getting tested. It's harder to pass a drug test for a part time job then it is for some of these guys. You know when you are fighting, you know you're going to get an examination before the fight. I personally feel that alcohol does far more abuse to someone than THC (that obviously depends on how much abuse) but if you know it's considered illegal, than you're taking a chance and debating on what's more important: Getting high tonight or your career. For me, it's an easy choice.... but it's obviously harder for others.
