Damn, that was a brutal dismantling of Kawajiri.  Consider that Kawajiri is considered a top ten lightweight by many people, and Melendez slaughtered him.  You've got to love the elbows on the ground if you're Melendez.  Great work Gil.

Im not a Gil fan at all.... but MAN, did he just cement himself as a top 3 lightweight in the world... WOW! I saw Jiri controlling the in the clinch and being stronger. Melendez just changed all the rules regarding this new Zuffa deal, they have to unify now after that.

Yeah Melendez looked like a beast in there tonight.
In my opinion he just solidified himself as a top 3 lightweight with Edgar and Maynard.
Would definitely like to see him make a run at the UFC title soon.

Yeah guys, I understand.  I think Kawajiri is brilliant also, and I look forward to seeing his next fight.  The thing about Gil to me is that he is very abrasive and standoffish.  (This could theoretically be due to hanging around with the Diaz brothers.)  But I can't knock his skills.

Kawajiri looked like he was in the best shape of his career too and Gil absolutely destroyed him.

I agree with TownStar... not a huge Gil fan, but I am now after that fight.  Holy crap.

Surprised many of you guys are not or weren't Melendez fans, but I guess I understand. I don't think he's getting showcased/profiled correctly. Either Strikeforce isn't promoting him properly, or something is going wrong.

I first saw Melendez in 2006 when he started fighting in Pride. Hadn't heard of him before then - he was supposedly coming into Pride off of some epic fight with a dude named Clay Guida, but neither name meant anything to me.  When he was in Pride there were some interviews including a really long segment on Sherdog radio with Gilbert, TJ DeSantis, and Josh Gross.  Melendez was such a down-to-earth guy, obviously loved MMA so much, and gave really interesting breakdowns of the experience of being at one of these events as a fighter that it was hard not to be a fan.

Somehow lately that isn't coming across I guess.

Also maybe some of his higher profile Strikeforce fights have been more tentative, careful. He had to be really careful and stick to his gameplan against Aoki, so that fight didn't make him look that great. Similar with his rematch with Josh Thomson since he had lost to him previously.  I guess you could say in those two fights he was fighting not to lose.

So where does everyone have Diaz and Melendez in their rankings today? I moved Diaz up to #5 and was tempted to make Melendez #1 LW but just moved him up one to #2

That was a ruthless performance. I would love to see Gil fight Edgar, Pettis or Alvares.

I think I may move Melendez to #1 LW and Diaz will likely move up

Before this weekend I had Melendez at 3 and Diaz at 8 in their respective weight classes.  Since I had both of them ranked higher than the opponents they beat this weekend, I suppose I can't move them up any higher, but damn impressive showings by both.  I'd still like to see Diaz against a power wrestler to see if he's top 5 material.  As far as Gilbert goes, they could schedule a fight with Frankie Edgar tomorrow and I'd probably pick Melendez.  He looked great against Kawajiri.  Strikeforce has no one for him anymore, it's time to put him against UFC fighters.

@wicked Maybe they can take a top UFC lightweight and put him against Melendez in Strikeforce.  Somehow they need to buy themselves some time.  You've got Maynard/Edgar 3, and then the winner against the Guida/Pettis winner.  So assuming that the UFC doesn't change up those plans, you're talking about maybe a year before Melendez can fight for the UFC title.  Maybe Sean Sherk is a good choice - he's not getting a UFC title shot anytime soon, so being able to fight for the Strikeforce title isn't a bad alternative.

To bad there isn't crossover fights for at least another eight months. That would be a good one!

It's pretty obvious that he wants the UFC's top LW opponents and he's going to get them soon.

I just wish there was a way to pit him against Alvarez before he officially hits the UFC.
